I hesitate to put my sentimental thoughts in this google review forum, but it feels important in this case ...
Reflecting yesterday on capoeira and the last almost year of training for me, I was stricken with gratitude and amazement. The quality of teachers in the Washington Capoeira Center - Mestre Mangangá, our Professores (Professor Galo who holds down classes here in Tacoma!), our Instrutores, and senior students, all hold this group to an unmatchable standard - and the quality of the teachings, consciously, culturally rooted with an eye for what they mean for people as individuals - is almost beyond comprehension. It definitely facilitates the growth of great capoeiristas, is a big reason why this is such a beautiful community, and certainly feels like it makes it easier to face the world with grace. For me it’s easy to take for granted but I just wanted to see it and recognize it for my own sake and anyone considering this place. What I did know was that the history is rich in social justice and resistance to slavery in Brazil, and that the art form blends dance with music. Professor Galo welcomed our family with calm humor as he coached my then 7yo boy through how to do a cartwheel in just two weeks, taught all three kids beautiful songs in Portuguese, all while teaching them how to “play” Capoeira, a skill they have happily carried with them in their lives, spontaneously playing the sport anywhere they have space to do so. Their body awareness and confidence were also both markedly improved. Overall an excellent experience for our...
