Mass burial at end of the Civil War of a group attempting to leave Confederate Texas, flee to Mexico, travel to the port of Vera Cruz & sail to New Orleans & join Union forces. 69 men , primarily German Texans members of the Union Loyal League , Pablo Diaz of Fredericksburg Texas & several Anglo Americans from the Haper area were followed & attacked by Confederate forces. At the war's end, the bodily remains were brought home to Comfort & buried , being remembered as men who died loyal to the Union. Our family picks up debris & trash on the grounds, place wreaths on appropriate dates, photograph visitors & listen to their stories of America's families during the Civil War. Nobody realy knew more about no contact to any relatives know. They left Europe and Germany to become free form feudalism, many were poor and lived in debt bondage of their landlords. Ā Ā Ā Read moreI was so shocked to learn about the massacre on the banks of the river in 1862. German Union Loyalists killed by Confederates while fleeing to Mexico. Turns out the flag that flies over the monument/ grave has 36 stars as did the US flag that flew in 1862. Will post photos soon... Go visit this site and gain a better understanding of the history...
