Note definitely call ahead if you don’t want to wait over a half hour for your food. (Their website states that you don’t have to call ahead, that you can just walk in to order, but absolutely call ahead. You can always just make a separate purchase for any grab and go stuff that isn’t listed on the menu.). I wish we would have known this. We just trusted the suggestion on the website, and lost valuable time on our road trip.
That said, the food was really tasty! We got the vegan oxtail bowl (the platter option is much more expensive but has sautéed veggies instead of the kale slaw. The slaw was fine. Not too raw tasting) and we also got the diri djon djon (“black” rice with the fried oyster mushrooms.)
The rice itself isn’t black. It’s more like “blackened” with spices. I noticed a hint of coconut in this. There were peas and Lima beans in this one. It was really nice. The tostones were a little dry, but I’m more of a sweet plantain person. Which just so happened to be included in the oxtail bowl, so I’m happy with that. The rice that was included in the oxtail bowl was more simple than the blackened rice, and had kidney beans in it. (This rice reheated much better than the other one.). The diri djon djon should be eaten all in one sitting. None of those components reheat particularly well, but all of the oxtail bowl reheated quite nicely. (Honestly, if you’re not in need of a second meal for 2 people, I would go for the single oxtail platter which certainly could feed 2 people, and leave it at that. We easily had 4 total meals out of what we ordered)
We also got a plantain patty. It wasn’t listed on the menu. It was tasty! It had small blasts of spiciness but was overall mild. Seemed like it was plantains and caramelized onions.
We also got the banana bread (straightforward) and strawberry keylimeade. (Quite refreshing and tasty.)
We managed to not make a mess while sitting at the bench outside. There is a table inside, but unfortunately there isn’t a little table outside. (I’m “Still Coviding” so I avoid removing my mask while inside buildings) there is, however, a little table outside the birria place next door, so if you don’t feel weird using another company’s seating. Go for it.
I would absolutely stop by again next time we’re passing through, but we’ll call...
Read moreUpon making the very first visit to the restaurant, I inquired about a few things, such as the ordering process and the availability on particular food items. I tried messaging them via instagram, but the communication was delayed and at times, left unread and unresponsive.
So, I went ahead and gave them a visit right when they opened on saturday afternoon. Thankfully, everything went smoothly, with the exception of one hiccup, in which I’ll explain later in the review. I ordered the brown stew plate, the jerk wrap and a callaloo patty. Everything was delicious!!!!! In addition I requested the cinnamon bun, as it was listed on their menu for the week, but they didn’t offer it. The handsome gentleman who took my order was kind and even shared with me some of his favorites from the menu.
On my second trip to the restaurant, I visited them right when they opened on friday evening. This time, the experience was a tad bit chaotic. Their patties sold out within an hour of opening. Their cinnamon bun was listed as part of the items offered that week, but turned out they actually weren’t offering it. The wait time to receive your order was about an hour long! I’ve never experienced waiting an hour for a takeout order. They definitely could utilize some extra helping hands, as other visitors experienced the same mishaps as well. Besides the takeout experience, I ordered the rasta pasta, the djon djon platter and a spinach patty. Again, the food was delicious!!!!! Despite of the unavailability on certain food items, the long wait time and the unresponsiveness, I would definitely visit again….but I pray that the operation of the restaurant and the communication get’s better as this vegan business THRIVES!!! ✨
Please be sure to check their instagram and website for...
Read moreI hate to do this, but I'm not pleased with my last interaction with this establishment. I initially placed an order for pick up on door dash. However, I decided I wanted to pay cash, so I called the restaurant directly to place the order with intentions on paying cash when I got there. After placing my order through the restaurant, I was given a total that was $10 over the amount noted through door dash. When I made them aware of this, they merely said "it's wrong." I then told them never mind, and proceeded to go back and the place order though door dash. That order went through. Confirmation received. However, when I picked it up, I only received one of the orders. Apparently they canceled the other order (vegan oxtail), noting "it was out of stock." So, instead of honering what's on their site, they allowed the order to go through, then canceled right when I went inside to pick it up, with a lie, stating it was out of stock. This is not how you do business, and treat customers. I...
