I waited a long time to do this review because it was very conflicted about it but all these months later I'm still ticked off about it. I purchased a 5-month-old Bernadoodle a couple months ago. I went to the New Hyde Park Petco. I had a conversation with Ashley on the phone and I explained to her that I had a Mini Bernedoodle and her hair was long and I didn't want her hair to be short and she told me she could have do a light clipping just to trim off a little bit and face feet and fanny and assured me that everything would be okay. I can tell you, this was my first time and I was a very nervous doggie mama. She was nice and I trusted her so I told her that I wanted her specifically to do it and went in for my appointment when the time came. I was excited and ready to go get my little baby cutend up💞! When I got there Ashley shows me this board that looked WAY too short for my liking and I let her know that but once again she told me it just looks short here but she knows what to do and it won't be that short and once again she tells me it'll be okay. I wasn't feeling so confident this time and I felt a little rushed so I accepted and off she went with my little girl 🥺. I am embarrassed to say and can't believe I become "that lady" but I'm adding it in to show you where I was. I walked out of the door with tears in my eyes like I had left my first born two days after birth. When I came back to pick her up I was very excited, swung open the door to the grooming shop only to see this weird looking poodle looking ugly things sitting there looking up at me with bright eyes 😢. I got so upset I literally started shaking and I turned around and ran out the door. I couldn't believe what I had just seen! Guys, I guarantee you I'm never like this and can't believe that I become "that lady" with this damn dog! She really has become my whole world though in this short span of time🥰. I went to go pay at the register and was venting to a customer. When I got to the front the manager explained to me that if I wasn't happy they have a policy that says I don't have to pay, so I didn't pay. But here's the best part! The manager of the grooming shop storms out of the grooming shop like Kramer on Seinfeld Is yelling words to the manager and tells the manager to give it to her and that she's done with this! She then stormed back into the grooming shop. I felt horrible and embarrassed! I felt like I did something terribly wrong. I was told to go get my dog next and I left. I thought this was how it is with this company but I just wanted to add that my next visit was in Baldwin with Stephanie and her consultation and continued care of my little girl is absolutely amazing! I would not go anywhere else. There are a couple other nice ones there too. Everybody should go to Baldwin! They know how to...
Read moreI have had nothing but fantastic experiences at this PETCO, and drive out to Garden City regularly instead of using my local pet food supply store.
First and foremost, I have a Landseer Newfoundland, which is a giant breed dog. He is very docile and sweet, but was slightly timid. I met the dog trainer Evelyn by chance walking in my neighborhood, and she noticed that he was a timid puppy and recommended puppy training for him.
He did very well in puppy training, and I find that the commands and the structure and very helpful and stay with the dog throughout time. He was placed in Adult II but did not have as much success because he is a comically lazy breed, and the much more complicated tasks were too much for him, no matter how great the treats were.
However, on another trip to this pet supply store, the trainer Evelyn again approached me, remembered my dog, and asked why he wasn't returning. When I explained that he didn't fair well in the Adult II class, she was kind enough to tell me to call her to set up and appointment, and she would personally test my dog to see where his skill level was, and get him back into a more appropriate training course.
I, as a first time dog owner, was made to feel very comfortable, confident, and like I had control over my giant dog at all times, thanks to the exceptional training we both received from Evelyn.
I also would like to compliment the grooming staff. There is a groomer by the name of Ilene that I would only trust my dog with. At only 12 weeks, she recognized his breed, and knew exactly how to handle a big, goofy, timid puppy. She was so incredibly sweet and gentle, that Banjo fell in love, and now this is the ONLY groomer I'm willing to take him to.
This PETCO is very friendly, the staff are more than competent in their job and their experience is astounding. I will never go anywhere else as long as I have my dog, and because he loves it here so much, so do I.
These other reviews are a shame, because this place is incredible. More than once, I even called the store and was able to talk to the trainer about any questions or concerns I had about Banjo when we weren't in class. They go above and beyond here.
Like I have mentioned before, I have a giant dog. Many groomers won't even take him on, much less dog trainers. They see an enormous animal and immediately assume he's aggressive or too much to handle. NONE of the staff at this PETCO turned away from my puppy. At almost 8 months (and nearly 90 lbs) I have enjoyed every minute of my relationship with this PETCO, and we will continue to come to this PETCO for years to come.
Thank you to Evelyn, Ilene, and the rest of the PETCO family for helping me become the best animal parent I could ever become. I am blessed to have...
Read moreIt has been a month since I brought my golden retriever to this Petco. Due to scheduling issues, I booked an apptmt at this location, thinking service would be the same. I don't think I would ever bring my dog back. The groomer was friendly but I don't think my dog had a positive experience. It was on 3/21 so the weather was still fluctuating. I had wanted to shave the fur a bit so that she wouldn't shed so much and also for hygiene reasons. The groomer asked me which blade I would prefer (the 5 blade vs. the 7) and I had told her, probably the 7 because 5 seems too short. She told me do the 5 blade and assured me that it would like fine as she had groomed another dog with same blade. It was not fine. I brought my dog in at 9am and at 12pm, I haven't heard if she was ready. It's usually about 2hours to groom my dog from other Petco's we've been to. When I called, another groomer told me it was because my dog was not cooperating. That was concerning to me as no groomer has ever told me she is uncooperative during grooming in the past 3yrs. When I got there, I was just so shocked by how she looked. I picked her up, paid, and left. When we got home, we realized the damage done. Of course fur will grow back but the groomer never came out to explain what happened. Her colleague handed my dog back to me. My dog went from a golden retriever to a siamese cat. You can tell the edge where the base of her head is, is all botched up. No one I've spoken to thought this was an appropriate job. I reached out to Petco. I waited 1 month and not 1 email or call. I brought my dog back to her regular groomer yesterday. He looked at her and shook his head. Even he said the job was, "inappropriate and the 5 blade was probably used because it's easier and quicker." Hindsight is 20/20 and I wish I had known better but I went to this location with the trust that my dog would be treated as her usual groomer would; not recommended easiest cut. I was hoping I would get professional advise, not shaving all her fur off when it's still cold out and coming home flinching whenever we tried to pet her. Definitely the worst Petco...
