One of the most impressive things to see along The Mall in Washington D.C. is the Lincoln Memorial Reflection Pool, a 618 metre long, 51 metre wide pool that stretches the length of the The Mall between the Lincoln and WWII Memorials.
This massive pool is beautifully and ideally situated in front of the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, where you can see a perfect reflection of the Washington Monument situated directly to the east. This is one of the famous photograph spots in the city and well worth finding during visits to the nation's capital.
Note: During the warmer months of the year, the row of trees on both sides of the Mall are full of green leaves, making for great photographs compared to winter months, when images are more stark and dramatic.
Note: You can walk along both sides of the Reflection Pool, which is a great way to proceed to the World War II Memorial and other monuments to the east of the Lincoln Memorial.
Note: There are are no seats along the pool and the trees are back around 20-25 metres on both sides, meaning there is no shade either. Make sure to wear a hat and have your sunscreen if you are walking the length of the pool during sunny days.
In the end, the Lincoln Memorial Reflection Pool is a remarkable landmark in D.C. and well worth taking a few minutes to enjoy from the Lincoln Memorial for pictures and another 15-20 minutes to walk along its side during your sightseeing...

The Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool are truly awe-inspiring and a must-see when visiting Washington, DC. The Lincoln Memorial itself is monumental, with the statue of President Abraham Lincoln sitting majestically at the end of the National Mall. The grandeur of the memorial, combined with the powerful words from the Gettysburg Address and Lincoln’s second inaugural speech etched into the walls, makes this site a moving tribute to one of America’s greatest leaders.
What truly enhances the experience is the Reflecting Pool, which stretches between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. It provides stunning, reflective views of both landmarks, especially at sunrise or sunset. The peaceful water and the surrounding greenery make for a serene atmosphere, offering a quiet place for reflection (pun intended!) amidst the busy city.
The area is also rich in history, having been the backdrop for significant moments like Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Walking along the pool and up the steps of the memorial feels like walking through history.
The Lincoln Memorial is open 24/7 and free to visit, making it accessible for anyone. I recommend visiting both during the day and at night when the memorial is beautifully lit. It’s a powerful reminder of the principles of freedom and unity that America...
Read moreThe Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool may not appear in its true length from this perspective shot from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial but it is almost half a mile walk along its mesmerizingly cool blue waters. The sidewalks are wide enough to accommodate even a wheelchair so that people of all ages and also the differently-abled can enjoy the serene and peaceful surroundings and the joy of walking in a traffic-free locality.
There were ducks in the shallow water of the reflecting pool. I had never seen anything like it and a long walk but well worth all the lovely views, especially on a warm June afternoon.
For a brief moment, I sat under a tree on the sloping lawns to just relax. What's not to love in the area surrounding the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool - great views, nice exercise with a nice experience while you marvel at its crystal beauty, and a perfect place to slow down as you hop between the monuments and museums in the Nation Mall area in DC.
