Starlight Hair Studio — Local services in Watchung

I found Starlight through Instagram while searching for someone in the area that had a good portfolio of vivid colors. I hadn't gone to get a professional salon in about 8 years (I do my own hair) so I knew price wise it would be a little spendy but... treat yo' self. I booked via the online form (which I appreciate so much not having to make phone calls). When I got there, Jocelyn's suite was so cutely decorated for Halloween and I loved all of the cute knick knacks and decorations. She was very friendly and welcoming. The total process took about 4 hours and when it was done unfortunately it wasn't quite what I expected. I had asked for bright purple and green tips (for halloween) and ended up with a very dark purple that was hard to see (even in the light) and a darker "muddy" green (Beetlejuice vibes if you will). It still fit the halloween theme but not the way I wanted. Unfortunately I wear glasses so they were off during the whole process and I wasn't able to see until everything was complete. I am also nonconfrontational so even though I should have said something then and there I didn't. I told Jocelyn that I loved it and went on my way. The res of the day I kept looking at myself in the mirror disappointed with the time and money I put in only to be dissatisfied with the results. I ended up texting her later that night and explained the situation and apologized for not telling her the truth at the salon. Jocelyn was so sweet and understanding. She recommended giving it a few days and washes to see if I would feel better about it but if I still wasn't happy, then we could schedule another day for me to get it fixed. In the end, I still wasn't happy but timing wise it was hard to find a day that would work so she actually saw me on one of her days off. This session took about 2 hours and truthfully I really am pleased with the results this time. The purple and green really pop and I'm so glad she was able to fix my hair! She also refused any additional payment and just wanted me to be happy with my hair. I highly recommend Jocelyn- she's so sweet and kind and wants her clients...

I've always wanted to do a blonde balayage to my hair since middle school, but I've always been scared because l've never dyed my hair before. I've also been on a wavy hair journey and I was scared to ruin my waves. However, Jocelyn assured me she would give me the blonde balavage I wanted without damaging my hair and she did just that!! The first time I came to her, we did a golden ash balayage just so I can get used to the idea of being blonde and she did a beautiful job. When I decided to go lighter a month later, it was the best decision I ever made!! I am so happy with my blonde now & I feel like a brand new person! I highly recommend Jocelyn for anyone who would like to get their hair done. The fact that she provides snacks and drinks is a plus too. Jocelyn is incredible. I started seeing her when she was at a different studio, and when she left to start Starlight, I moved with her. Even though I no longer live in New Jersey, I travel to get haircuts with her because I trust her so much and she has done a great job with my hair.

While Jocelyn does amazing colors, I see her to get a traditional haircut. My hair is naturally curly and she cuts it so that it looks good (and not boxy) when I wear it curly, and also so it looks good when I wear it straight.

The experience in her space is very calming. It is just the two of you in a very cheery, happy room, and it is a very comfortable place either to chat, or sit in silence. Also, there is no option to tip - while she does not have to do this and I understand if she switches one day, it takes off the stress of figuring out how much to tip, and the cost you see online is exactly what you will be paying.
