I am extremely disappointed with the treatment my best friend and I experienced at the HomeGoods on 28th St in Grand Rapids. Last week, while shopping, my friend politely asked an associate if she could hold an item (a desktop) for him while he checked another nearby store to compare options. The associate rudely replied, โNo, we donโt hold items.โ While the policy is understandable, the manner in which she delivered the message was unnecessarily disrespectful and lacked professionalism. Despite her attitude, we chose to leave the store without making a big deal about it.
After finding that the item he wanted was sold out at the other store, my friend returned to purchase the desktop at this location. He then asked another staff member if, in case the item did not fit in his car, the store could hold it until he could come back to pick it up the next day. This time, the staff member kindly agreed. However, as we were taking the desktop out to the car, the same manager, in an extremely inappropriate manner, came out and told us, โYOU cannot take items out of the store,โ even though my friend had already paid for it.
To make matters worse, she sent another staff member to the parking lot to demand proof of purchase by asking for the receipt. This behavior was unacceptable and felt demeaning. We strongly believe that we were treated this way due to discriminatory bias because we are, look, and speak Spanish/Latino.
This experience left us feeling targeted and unwelcome. Discrimination like this should not happen in a place of businessโor anywhere. I hope HomeGoods takes this seriously and ensures proper training for their staff to prevent such unacceptable behavior...

My mom and brother first paid and my momโs first language isnโt English and she was speaking to my brother not about the cashier or anything to do with the store. As I was checking out after my mom the cashier ( didnโt get her name but elder lady possibly into her 60s) asked me what language they were speaking and I told her, well then she proceeds to say โ I really think america should have never started printing anything in multiple languages if people come here they should learn Englishโ. After I had already told her my mom understands English and also speaks it not well but she tryโs! She continues with her nonsense and I was holding back what I actually wanted to say because who is she to say what a person can do and not? She herself also came here from another country and even said her mother refused to learn English! Anyways I try to pay to just get out there and I show her an electronic GC she acts like sheโs never seen or had people pay with their phones and asks another worker and heโs like yes thatโs a valid payment itโs a gift card but on her phone just scan it. He kinda heard some of the stuff she was saying and looked annoyed with her! Ended up paying and being the better person and just said โHappy Holidays โ which she seemed shocked I said after all she was saying and trying to insinuate. She should just be more aware of how she talks to customers and if she doesnโt like or want to hear other languages...

She responded, "You don't want to give $1 to a little girl fighting cancer?" Her tone was condescending and rude suggesting I was being greedy by not donating $1. My infant grandson died of cancer almost 5 years ago and my husband and I give generously to 2 children's cancer organizations. I won't EVER shop at this store again and I would suggest Lori keep her mouth shut because you never know why a customer has said no...
