The location is excellent and the room is extremely comfortable - large, well lit, clean, beautifully fitted and furnished, and with a breathtaking view over the old town and the valley. Staff were welcoming when we arrived and organised parking for us proactively before we were even out of the car. We left a mobile phone in the room and the staff went above and beyond getting the phone to us by taxi at the next hotel in Vlore, which we were hugely grateful for. Overall, this is an excellent hotel and I would likely stay here again.
So why not five stars? Two major issues: 1. No-one at reception most of the time. We would have liked to have got more soap for the shower but there was no-one to ask. 2. Breakfast was 8-10, we got there at 9 and it had just about been cleared out - we got the scraps. Meanwhile, the wait staff were extremely unhelpful and clearly resented us being there. It took insistence on my part to get any coffee at all. It's a shame, because Onufri would otherwise be a fantastic place to stay.
It is possible we got unlucky - the staff had told us there was an event that night, and it seems the wait staff at breakfast were dealing with the fallout of a very large crowd. I suspect things would have been different on a quieter night. A tip to management: if the restaurant is going to struggle in the morning, just warn guests the night before - we would have been perfectly happy to go elsewhere...
Read moreMy wife and I stayed here for just one night in late September, ‘23 as part of a small group tour of the Balkans. It was a pleasant stay and we would have liked to stay longer.||The hotel is on a side street just a short way off the river, and it is a very attractive building in the same classic style that is the hallmark of Berat. It is very close to the scenic walk along the river and close to restaurants, shops, and historic sites. Our room (101) was very large and had a nice view of the open area in front of the hotel and the shops opposite. There was a comfortable king bed and one twin bed, two night stands with outlets, a desk, armoire, and a small refrigerator. The bathroom was large and attractive, with a shower, a stylish raised sink, and plenty of storage space on the surrounding vanity.||Breakfast was served in a restaurant area on the street level, only reached by going outside and down the steps. It was a pleasant setting, but the breakfast itself is hard to evaluate because we arrived after one or more tour groups had pretty well cleaned everything out and nothing much was left. We suspect that under normal circumstances it would have been very adequate.||Overall, we found the Onufri to be a comfortable and convenient place to explore Berat, and we...

The hotel's architecture beautifully reflects the traditional Berati house style, and the rooms continue this local feel with their handcrafted wooden ceilings and delightful windows that look out onto the picturesque town. The convenience of an on-site restaurant on the ground floor, coupled with their own dedicated parking, is a definite plus. If you opt for the breakfast inclusive rate, you're in for a treat. Forget a quick buffet; breakfast here is a set menu showcasing traditional Berati/Albanian cuisine. It's not only delicious but also incredibly photogenic, especially if you manage to snag a table in their outdoor seating area. Expect a colourful and generous spread of hot and cold dishes, featuring local cheeses, butter, jams, marmalades, fruit juice, coffee, and fresh fruits. Just be aware that the set breakfast isn't a grab-and-go affair. They prepare it fresh upon your arrival, so you'll need to factor in some time – easily 30 to 45 minutes minimum to fully enjoy this leisurely morning meal. It’s an experience in itself, so embrace the slower pace and savour the local flavours...
