Paulin Overhyped and Overrated

I came here with an open mind and left wondering how this place keeps a 4 star rating. Let’s cut through the hype: Paulin is nothing more than a greasy, gimmicky tourist trap.

The famous “sandwiches”? A big zero. Terrible bread, an overcooked milanesa soaked in oil, and fries that were soggy and literally soaking in oil. Even the napkins are wax paper, who thought that was a good idea for greasy food?

What really killed it for me was the kitchen floor, a baguette lying there the entire time I was eating. Nobody picked it up, nobody cared. That tells you everything you need to know about hygiene standards here. Bathrooms? Just as filthy.

Yes, the waiters are polite and the plate sliding gimmick might entertain a first timer, but food quality here is abysmal. My sandwich was so drenched in oil I could see right through the paper.

The only decent part of the meal was the coffee, drinkable but nothing that saves the experience.

And yet there’s a line of people outside, convinced they’re about to eat something legendary. Either they’ve never eaten a proper sandwich in their life, or they’ve confused nostalgia with quality. Don’t ever compare this to a sandwich in Italy or anywhere else serious about food.

If you’re in Buenos Aires and actually want good food, skip the circus. Paulin is living off Instagram hype and misplaced tradition, not quality.

Final verdict: A greasy gimmick. One star...

I have no idea how this place maintains a 4.4 rating. All the seats are at the bar and they are very uncomfortable. There’s not enough room for your knees. We could not find a way to sit comfortably. Also, you’re too close to other patrons right next to you. There was a lot of body odor inside, I’m not sure if it was employees or the other patrons next to us. The flavor of the sandwiches was marginal at best. My sandwich was very dry and not very tasty. The plates were sliding down the counter with French fries flying off plates and this was annoying. This place is kind of gimmicky; it seems to always have a line out front; they keep people in the line by giving them samples of the sandwiches. Those taste of those samples should have been our clue to run. I don’t know maybe this is an “Argentina thing” and they love this kind of place, but to us, it was not clean; we got the heebie-jeebies eating there. We ate about a quarter of our food and then we got it wrapped up to take away so we could give the food to a homeless person; which we promptly did. One small benefit was that they had a 20% discount in effect currently so it was not that expensive of a “1/4 lunch”, but it was a waste of our time since the food was not delectable and the atmosphere less than desirable. Don’t waste your time with this place. There are many, many better options in...
