Recently found Pixie and the Hawk - and would love to know the story behind the name ! It’s a small little cafe on Henley Beach Road , and you probably wouldn’t know it’s there unless you stumbled upon it by accident ( or google things like I do ) . It’s a cozy little place lots of wood and cute little tables - or you can sit on stools next to the window and watch the traffic go by . It’s menu is a little eclectic, lots of options for different dietary needs - and a good cup of joe . The coffee they used for my almond latte was a blend called Five Senses , which is a sustainable bean from Papua New Guinea which is brewed in Melbourne. I had the Dark Horse Blend , which was dark , very smooth and slightly fruity . Very satisfying. My friend had the Turkish delight latte - and yes it really is that pink ! He said that all it needed was a small piece of the sweet next to the cup . And a piece of banana bread , which was moist and flavourful. I wanted to try something different , so decided on the Ube Slay with an apple crumble granola and an Ube anglaise , and a brûlée vanilla panacotta with fermented rhubarb. This sounds like a dessert filled with dairy , but is completely vegan . For those of you that don’t know , ube is a purple yam , quite often used in Asian desserts , and the colour is quite bright . The fermented rhubarb had a slight ginger taste , but the surprise was the apple crumble granola, which in addition to the cinnamon and nutmeg , had the addition of some tumeric , which added extra spice and depth to the taste . Really enjoyed this complex combination of flavours . The atmosphere of this place reminded me of living in inner city Brisbane about 20 years ago , quite alternative and a little funky , with staff quite happy to chat a while with you . Also enjoyed the interesting little art pieces on the wall, they gave the room a little more character. Place definitely...
Read moreI have been going to Pixie for 4 or so years now, and it is my local coffee shop. This place has always been brilliant, and is an absolute gem. I wouldn't call myself a coffee connoisseur, (however I have worked as a barista on and off for about 2 years total, so know my way around a good and bad cup) and the team here absolutely knocks it out of the park every single time. The beans they use are always changing and that keeps the experience fresh. The decor of the place is very cosy and gives it a local Torrensville living room feel. I've always felt right at home, be it reading a book on the couch or bringing the dogs in for a treat.
The staff have always been super friendly and I've never had to wait too long for food or coffee, Considering how busy it can be. Times when it's taken a little longer, it never bothered me as there's always something quirky to look at, or something to comment about with my friend/partner.
The food is really good; some stuff on the menu is a bit smaller than others but it is always delicious and creative. I appreciate the effort to provide many vegetarian and vegan options as opposed to a token menu item here or there.
Considering the price of coffee and groceries has increased significantly over the last couple of years these people have still remained competitive throughout.
Definitely give this place a try (particularly on the weekdays when it's not super hectic!) if you haven't already. I will be back often for good chats, good coffee...
Read moreRude staff - EDIT since their reply was rude, like their service
I came in for my belated birthday coffee and brunch with some friends and brought in some food that I made myself at home because I have extreme dietary requirements. At other venues it has been fine as I purchase a drink as well, but a staff member approached me to inform me that outside food was not allowed to be consumed on the premises. I replied abruptly “I’ll starve then” which sparked the staff member to reply quite demeaning “We are happy to make you something from the menu so you can eat”… (the reason why I had brought in other food is because I cannot) …“usually when people go to restaurants they order the food at the restaurant and don’t bring in food from other places.” It wasn’t polite or nice. This staff member then went back to the kitchen and spoke to another staff member, clearly about me as they were staring at me from around the corner. It must’ve been the highlight of their day, but I found this extremely rude and childish. It would’ve been nice to be asked WHY I had brought in other food, instead of being told that I can order food instead. It’s fine, I will never return and neither will my friends. Just thought I should let others know incase they would like to bring any other food in. Also can’t split bills on weekends which...
