Been here several times in the past for pho and d.i.y. cold rolls and been pleased with the food. Last Friday however, not pleased. Went with family member for lunch- we're both former chefs. We ordered the fried chicken wings and the d.i.y. combo cold rolls. The chicken wings were just wrong. I get they can be pre-cooked, I'm ok with that but these we're dry and tough. This suggested that perhaps they hadn't been refrigerated after pre-cooking. There was no seasoning at all and they had been re-cooked by deep frying at too low temperature in old oil. Results very poor- sent back to kitchen. Ordered instead the salt and pepper chicken. Same problem with the oil temp-too low. The coating on the chicken was half way between a flour dust and a batter. Not good. There was no salt in the salt and pepper chicken either, the seasoning was all wrong. When the cold rolls arrived we tucked into those happily. Very tasty and fulfilling, redemption for the "Chickengate Fiasco" ..........until the restaurant's kitchen shot themselves in the foot again. There was a black hair in our lettuce. Called the waiter and he replaced the lettuce for us. Then we found a second black hair on our cold rolls platter. Game over. There seems to be some sloppy practices in the kitchen. In that neighbourhood Thanh thanh is not the only Vietnamese restaurant to serve tasty food. I'll be having a break from there for a while whilst I explore other options. I hope they can get their act together because as I said earlier I usually...
Read morePho. I'm always searching, looking for that elusive best examples of this Vietnamese treasure. Breakfast of champions, lunch of legends, dinner of ... ? You get my drift.
Anyhow, tucked away on a side street just nearby the central markets is a nondescript restaurant. That's a good sign. Aquarium at the back, I scan the menu briefly happy to see Bun Rieu as a recommended special. Tempted to get this Crab 🦀 and tomato 🍅 noodle soup offering as good ones are so good and hard to find, but like I said before, I'm here for the Combination Pho.
All the proper condiments offered, plenty of bean sprouts and basil, coriander and fresh chilli. The stock, the quintessential element of a good Pho is flavoursome and complex. There is an abundance of ingredients, generous rare beef slices and many noodles. Filling and delicious. Easily one of the best Pho I've had in the city.
Only dropped a star because the music was way too loud, even with my noise cancelling headphones on. Didn't help that I was plonked right under the speaker, but I doubt being anywhere else would have made a difference - it was that loud.
Will return to try that...
Read morethe dishes are pretty good when you only dine in. The takeaway services are a bit disappointing. Takeaway soups from dishes such as Pho, Bun Bo Hue, Bun Rieu,… are always being leaked even though it’s taken a good care of. No wrap inside the containers is the reason why. The food is ok with the price. The tossed noodle is worse time by time. There is so little sauce put in the noodle and make it so dry and tastes like raw noodle. The boiled meat and seafood put on top are not that good and tastes so plain, even though I put more sauces. The combination rice tastes good tho but not the crackling pork rice which is so disappointing that the pork is burned completely and soggy, and the rice tastes plain. I hope the restaurant sees this comment and try to improve their dishes. I’ll be coming back because I do really want to see the efforts that restaurant could do in future. Because this restaurant used to be my most favourite and I always recommended to my friends. But none of us is really satisfied when coming back to have...
