I used to go to the union all the time because it's right next to my work, and also because the food was INCREDIBLE. I went there tonight for the first time in ages and it's completely lost its touch. The chicken schnitzel was uncooked, it was pink in the middle. When I pointed it out the male waiter said rudely to us 'where though?' And I pointed directly at the pink middle of it and he said 'oh it's meant to be like that' ? Huh? Chicken isn't meant to be pink. And the chips used to be crunchy and golden and salty, these chips had NO flavour, were barely cooked and had no salt on them. My friend asked for new chips which they brought out but they were still pretty much the same. And the salad was just leaves with no dressing or anything else. I used to get salad there that had onion, tomato, horseradish and a tangy dressing as well. Whoever the chef is that took over from the previous chef should take some lessons. Like, plain lettuce leaf salad? Nothing else? 35 bucks for uncooked chicken, tasteless fries and leaves. It was a pathetic first pub meal to the year. Really disappointing and the service was terrible (just from the waiter guy, the bar ladies are nice). I won't be back which is a shame, I used to go there twice a week at least. RIP union...
Read moreWe came in for a quick meal before heading to a show on a Saturday night. The fact that there weren’t many people in the dining area should have warned us. The music coming from the speakers was so loud that we had to shout at each other to be heard. When my husband ordered our meals at the bar, the waitress obviously couldn’t hear what meals he ordered and when she read them back he couldn’t hear what she’d said, resulting in one of the orders being wrong. The waitress took the meal back to the kitchen explaining the error, I presumed. She then returned it to the table saying “It’s what you ordered and I read the order back to you”. Then she plonked it back in front of me and left. I ended up with a pork chop instead of a poke salad. I can’t eat pork. Which I explained to her. She just walked away. The meal remained uneaten and I went hungry except for some chips from my husbands plate. I’m not quite sure what I was expecting but there was no follow up. Would you like something else? Etc. Anyway, we won’t ever be going back there to eat. Oh by the way we could smell the toilets from where we were sitting. Turn...

Tucked away on Waymouth Street, the Union isn’t just another upscale bar, it’s a refined experience for those who appreciate craft, culture, and character.
What elevated my visit wasn’t just the quality of the food or the smooth Barossa reds, it was the people behind the bar. Pedro and Shreya redefined hospitality. Their attention to detail was surgical: every pour, every garnish, every recommendation felt intentional.
Their knowledge of Australian wine, especially the robust reds that define this region, was nothing short of impressive. But what stood out even more was their ability to translate that knowledge into a conversation that felt personal and insightful, not pretentious.
For the well-traveled, and well-informed, Union is more than a place to unwind, it’s a place to connect, learn, and savor. Highly...
