Dinner at the recently reopened @press_food_and_wine! This was from a couple of weeks ago. It was an absolutely fantastic meal! We went with a la carte rather than the feed me menu. The food was amazing. The wine selection was great. The service was excellent. Overall, a huge huge improvement over the old Press. . Gazander oysters: we normally aren't huge fans of oysters, but these were really nicely done ๐๐. Tastes very fresh, and not too oyster-y. Good way to start off the meal! . Bread: nice warm bread, with a very smooth butter. I was very hungry when the bread got served, so it was perfect timing ๐๐. . Potato skins, fromage blanc, tarragon: these stuffed potato skins were fantastic! They're super crunchy, and the stuffing was super creamy. Amazing dish ๐๐๐คค๐คค. . Chicken liver parfait, choux au craquelin, onion caramel: omg I totally loved their version of the chicken liver parfait! The choux pastry was excellent, and gave it a nice sweet flavour. The liver parfait was super smooth. Just absolutely perfection ๐๐. . Seasonal cruditรฉs, spiced yoghurt: nice pickled and fresh vegetables. Good to have along with the heavier dishes like the liver parfait. . Boston Bay pork ribs, pepper, lime, plum: these pork ribs were nice and tender, and the sauce was really interesting ๐๐. Not like your typical pork ribs. . Kingfish crudo, olive oil, pink pepper, fennel: this dish tasted very fresh ๐คค๐คค. So delicious! . Kangaroo tartare, leek, yolk, potato: I must say I've never had kangaroo tartare before ๐. Tastes a little bit like beef tartare, but this dish was delicious! It was very much full of flavour, but didn't really have a raw meat feel to it. . Abalone, chicken skin, root vegetables: I couldn't really taste the chicken skin, but this dish was nicely balanced. Lots of different flavours and textures ๐. . Dry-aged beef, beef fat vinaigrette, celeriac: Wow! This beef was excellent! It was soooooo good! Very tender. Full of flavour. Perfect ๐๐๐. . Boston Bay pork, bbq paste, zucchini: another good main dish. Big piece of nicely grilled pork chop. Can't go wrong ๐คค. . Wood-grilled Murray cod, kohlrabi, native citrus: the cod was super tender, and the flavours were very nicely balanced, but it was a bit on the small side. I think if it was my main and we weren't sharing, it might not have been big enough ๐คท? . Potatoes, smoked salt, parsley: always love a bowl of delicious crispy potatoes ๐คค๐คค. . Wombok cabbage, green sauce: didn't think wombok would ever make it into a western restaurant ๐, but it was a delicious side dish! Unexpected but good! . Lemon, yoghurt, lemon thyme: delicious dessert dish! The ice cream was a little bit like a semifreddo. Good balance of tangy lemon and sweet flavours ๐. . Figs, honeycomb, vanilla: I always love having figs in a dessert dish ๐คค๐คค. This was so good! . Smoked chocolate, coffee, orange: this was a really interesting dish! I didn't know it was going to be like a mousse ๐. It was very light, but...

In all honesty before your renovation I would always give 5 stars for enjoyment, you where my favorite resutrant to go to when I would make the hour long trip into the city, and I would always recommend your establishment to those I knew. The food was nicely portioned for the price / quality and I kept coming back. The atmosphere and wooden featres where something I and I know others loved. However this is where the paise ends as well I will not be returning to this place.
I dont ever review but I was quite fond of what you had going and thought it would be best to share my feedback as I really did like this place. The "renovation" is what took me back quite quickly, the wooden features the quirky home-style feel was gone and compleatly replaced with quite a bland boring, uncomfortable upmarket feel. However it was the menue and food that lost me. The food was sluggish to come out, and portioned so small. I left the resurant hungry after two starters, a main and desert. As I had been here prior I ordered one of my favorites, dry aged beef, $55 for 4 rather thin slices of meat. This is compared to the 12-15 slices plus a redwine coulie / red cabbage I was greeted to before renovation for the same price. Though this made me disappointed the deserts never seemed to fail me, however this one did $18 for a thumb sized potion ofchocolate, "smoked" coffee creme and a small dusting of orange peels. The deserts would fill up the plate and be bustling with flavor / zest. This was sloppy.
Unfortunately I can't see the reason to drive over an hour to eat at your establishment any longer, nothing really draws me in anymore, not the food, not the decor and not the atmosphere. Your quirky edge has been lost and thus you have lost a fond customer. It is unfortunate to...
ย ย ย Read moreA return visit to Press after a brief gap. New renovation is lovely and comfortable even if lacking a little of the warmth of the prior setup. Theyโve also maybe lost a little of the fun along the way.
Things started well, lots of attention for the first 5 minutes. Received a lovely glass of Manzanilla and ordered a little starter and 2 entrees (I had a fairly decent lunch).
Bread arrived - and itโs still reliably the best thing youโll eat at Press. Then my starter. It was tasty and gone very quickly. Then I became invisible. Couldnโt get any attention to order a glass of wine.
My 2 entrees arrived together (one cold and one hot) with a fair bit of confusion and were literally dropped next to me and abandoned. My two empty plates and empty glass sat staring at me. As did my empty water glass. I figured Iโd start eating and the opportunity to get a glass of wine would arrive shortly. Nope.
I was a little way through my 4th plate of food by the time someone stopped to clear my empty vessels. She did ask if Iโd like a drink to which I replied โThat would be lovelyโ. She walked away with stacked dishes and never returned.
So I finished my meal a little forlorn. I was presented with the opportunity to provide feedback when my final plates had been cleared and at that point even offered a complimentary glass of something. Sadly a little too late. The guy I spoke to when paying was genuinely charming and apologetic and would liked to have remedied things if he could. At that point all I wanted was to get over to Leigh Street Wine Room where I am writing this while being attentively plied with glasses of wine and conversation.
The food was good but not thrilling. Perhaps with some wine it would have...
