Overview M.D. is a stylish Japanese restaurant located next to the entrance to Milton train station on Railway Terrace, occupying the former site of the once popular Stazione Italian restaurant.
Food The food was exceptional across the board. We began with a bottle of my favourite Asahi Super Dry ($9), miso soup ($5), crunchy edamame beans ($7), and a serving of "fireworks" sushi rolls ($19). These rolls have mushroom and cucumber with black rice, topped with avocado and pickle, seasoned with chili powder and glazed with mayo. There were six huge pieces to the serve. They were fresh and tasty and neatly laid out in a long, oval shaped bowl. The refreshing Asahi, soup, beans, and sushi made for an ideal start to our meal. For our main courses, I ordered the chicken katsu in Japanese curry with rice ($23), while my wife opted for the salmon, without the egg ($19). The chicken dish was substantial, with tender meat in a crispy batter, complemented by a flavorful Japanese curry sauce with chunky vegetables. The salmon was nicely cooked and served atop a bed of rice, though the portion was slightly small. Presentation was neat and stylish on modern crockery. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals.
Service A young male waiter, smartly dressed with a headband, attended to us throughout the evening. He provided friendly, polite, and efficient service. Orders were taken promptly, and our meals arrived quickly and in the order requested. Everything flowed smoothly from start to finish, contributing to a relaxed and hassle-free dining experience. Clearly, the staff are well-trained, and the restaurant hums like a well-oiled machine.
Ambience We loved the cool and airy atmosphere, which is perfect for dining on warm spring nights. There are both indoor and outdoor seating options; even indoors, where we sat, it was breezy with doors wide open. The spacious outdoor terrace is inviting during hot nights. The interior is vibrantly decorated with a large photo montage on one wall, abundant greenery, mood lighting, and comfortable booth seating with upholstered leather benches and solid wooden tables. This creates a bright and cheerful ambience that feels warm and inviting. We dined on a quiet Sunday night with only a few other diners, adding to the relaxed vibe with good acoustics.
Cost Despite the high-quality dining experience, I found the prices quite reasonable given the current hyperinflationary crisis affecting the country. Our bill came to $80 for a bottle of Asahi, a bowl of miso soup, edamame beans, sushi rolls, and two main dishes: chicken katsu curry and salmon. With my Entertainment Club membership discount of 25%, our final total was $61, which was very good value for money.
Toilets The restaurant does not have its own toilets; so one needs to request a key from the waiter to access nearby facilities, located just around the corner past the abandoned Rashays restaurant. Inside, you'll find clean and well-equipped male, female, and disabled toilets.
Parking Ample street parking is available nearby on Railway Terrace or in Walsh Street.
Summary We had a fab evening at M.D., and everything ran smoothly — from easy online booking to fast service and generous portions of tasty cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere. With clean facilities and plenty of parking options nearby, it’s an excellent choice for dining out with family or friends. I highly recommend Mono Dining and look forward...
Read moreCame for weekday lunch, had the karaage ramen. It was pretty average, the chicken was nice and tasted like properly made karaage. The broth was average but I didn't expect anything mind blowing considering it's not a ramen dedicated restaurant. I enjoyed the addition of shredded mushroom. The noodles were clumped together in some parts and tasted very cheap which kind of ruined the dish. For $18 I probably wouldn't get it again. Good noodles are an important part of ramen and without them, it was very average.
Staff was lovely, my food came out 10 mins after my friend who was at the same table as me, but they did have a large group sit at the same time as us so there may have been a mix up there.
The restaurant itself was very pretty, I love the ceiling lights which have been made out of glass bottles with the...
Read moreLocation + high google review were the reason we chose this place. Overall, I'm disappointed, the service is nice, but ashamed I couldn't say that with the food. Sashimi is fresh, tempura prawns are ok. The topcoat is very thick, portion of rice in my Don is MASSIVE, plus no sauce or anything to go with it. Wagyu tataki, a cold dish that is impossible to go wrong in any Japanese dining, is a no here. Love the fried garlic, but that's the only good thing I can say about the dish. The balance of sour (From the yuzu vinegar) and the saltiness is not well, too sour, makes it hard to even taste anything else. What makes it even worse is the THINEST slice of beef that u can ever get. Again, the service is nice, but will I ever come back for it? No. I'll go to straight to the bento shop...
