Shingle Inn Brookside — Restaurant in Brisbane City

A rather large cafe inside Brookside Shopping Center! Both inside & outside so you can witness the hussle & bussel of shopping in the centre! Wheelchair access is available! Great coffee & menu! Cakes & fresh produce is always used to prepare the customers with a delicious meal choice! Helpful & friendly service provider by the staff in store! During the COVID you had to write down your details but the service was excellent. WOW! Clearly the very very best Eggs Benedict in all of Brisbane. The Hollandaise sauce is beautiful & creamy.. Friendly warm service especially early in the morning...I felt very very very welcome.. Recommend this cafe. On a winter's morning so very very chilly. My Eggs Benedict was especially creamy. The best in Brisse. Yes Really. The girls friendly smiles welcomed me. Well things have gone downhill lately. Dave & I ordered two raspberry & mango smoothies and we got two different ones....

Staff were great and seemed very cohesive and friendly. I witnessed a lot of demanding and, to be frank, rude customers come through in the couple hours I was there and each staff member handled the interactions with dignity and aplomb. Really superb staff.

The three stars is for the extremely mediocre food and drinks. I ordered a fish burger and hot chocolate. I think the hot chocolate powder is weak to begin with as even after loading up my hot chocolate with more powder, it still tasted like hot milk.

The fish burger wasn't anything special and the bun seemed slightly stale as they had toasted it, but it was hard and crunchy all the way though. It actually cut my mouth up a bit. There were 4 little fish fillets, so along with the salad and concrete bun, it was quite difficult and messy to consume.

I probably won't be back, but I also didn't leave in a bad mood, so...

Never in my time of dining out have I ever witnessed so many breaches of H&S.

The level of cross contamination I witnessed within the kitchen is absolutely appalling. Whilst the cooks are not required to wear gloves, they are required to wash their hands regularly, what I witnessed was absolutely disgusting!

The cooks handled chicken then placed their hands in the large salad holder then went from that to handling bread and then used a dirty cloth that was used on the bench tops to then wipe the knife that was also used with chicken.

Not only is this a complete and utter disgrace it’s cross contamination to the fullest as it’s chicken and can make someone extremely sick.

I would definitely be concerned if you have eaten here lately and would advise should you wish to, that they have been put through extensive H&S recap training.
