Overview Sushi Honke is a super cool little sushi joint conveniently located in the Brookside Shopping Centre.
Food Everything we ordered was delicious and beautifully prepared in that subtle but flavoursome Japanese way. My wife and I dined on a Tues night in May and we ordered a variety of dishes including seaweed salad, salmon aburi and vegetable gyozas to start with, and followed that up with chicken katsu don and sizzling teriyaki tofu. And to wash it down, our favourite Kirin Ichiban and Sapporo lager. The seaweed salad and the salmon aburi were fresh and healthy choices. The veg gyozas were tasty but small, with just three pieces on the plate. My chicken katsu don had lashings of tender, succulent chicken in a crispy batter, with lettuce, on top of a bed of fluffy rice, and topped off with a light covering of creamy mayonnaise. The teriyaki tofu was brought out sizzling hot and the tofu was soft as butter, with noodles, peppers and shallots to give it that extra flavoursome crunchy texture. Presentation of the dishes was neat on stylish and modern crockery. We loved everything about our meals.
Service Each table has a tablet, which makes ordering super easy, quick and efficient. Drinks are brought out almost immediately, while food takes a little longer, but it all runs smoothly. Staff are polite, neatly dressed in smart black uniforms and available to help if necessary. You can also choose your own dishes directly from the sushi train and have that added to your bill.
Ambience The ambience is relaxed, laid back and casual in a modern, clean and well lit restaurant with comfy booth type seating or regular tables, tiled floors and stylish wooden arches. As it was midweek, the place was fairly quiet with just a smattering of other diners, but enough to give it a nice vibe. The rest of the shopping centre, apart from the two supermarkets, was closed, so there was limited activity apart from this place, and some late night shoppers.
Cost We paid a tot of 75 for two beers, a cold drink, the seaweed salad, veg gyozas, aburi salmon, miso soup, chick katsu don and flaming teriyaki. I guess in this age of hyperinflation, thanks to massive govt spending and borrowing, this is what we have come to expect, when something which would have cost 50 a few years ago, now costs 75. But to be fair to these guys, it isn’t their fault and in terms of value for money, I would give them 9/10.
Toilets & Parking The shopping centre has masses of free parking and there’s even a little section of it just behind the bus stop that’s right in front of this venue, making parking an absolute breeze and that’s something that’s always important to us. There are ample clean and well provisioned toilets inside the centre, just beside the food court. It was a bit eerie going to the toilets in the deserted shopping centre with no-one else around apart from a cleaner and a sec guard.
Summary We had a fantastic dinner here on a quiet Tues evening. No booking was needed - we simply showed up around 6:30pm and found plenty of available tables. The vibe is cool and laid back. You seat yourself and order using the tablet; staff are on hand if needed. The food and drinks arrived quickly, the staff were efficient and polite, and the operation ran like clockwork. Every dish was fresh, beautifully presented, and full of flavour. Pricing was reasonable, and the whole experience - from the ambience to the location and amenities - made for a very enjoyable night out.

Read moreMy family and i went to this restaurant tonight for my 16th birthday and witnessed appalling and confronting behaviour from one of the chefs. One of the female chefs accidentally dropped a lid on the table of one of the customers and one of the male chefs grabbed her by the arm dragging her down and pulling her by her ear for making a mistake. Thankfully one of the customers stood up for her and yelled at the man. This behaviour seemed so normalised in the work place as the boss seemed to have brushed it off like it was nothing. The poor girl continued cooking until having to run out balling her eyes out. He has done this in front of an entire restaurant full of people and keeping in mind - they cook in the middle of all the tables so you can watch how they cook. This man abused this girl in front of EVERYBODY and acted like it was fine. If he can do that in front of people i can only imagine what he’d do behind...
Read moreLast Saturday I visited here with my boyfriend. A female employee who was on the sushi side accidentally dropped the lid and fell on a customer's table. The glass cup was broken, and the male employee, who seemed to be the manager, said something very bad to the female employee who made the mistake. I am used to Korean because I like Korean dramas. His spit out was a word that began with an F and a word that began with a B. And he grabbed the woman by the wrist and pulled her and shouted to get out of here. Fortunately, another customer stopped him from acting, the male employee ignored the customer, and the female employee left crying. It was the worst restaurant ever. I hope I will not see the male employee again at that restaurant. I will...
