update 18/4/23 - broth is quite salty(also know as "tasty" to some) so adjust accordingly!
Disclaimer: Canberra rating - 5-star; if in Sydney, probably 4-star.
FINALLY!!! A good ramen joint arrives in Canberra!!!
I love my ramen and it's one of my go-to things when visiting Sydney, which is not short of places to enjoy a good one but it has been embarrassingly disappointing to have it in Canberra.
... Until now!!
The queues don't lie. We got there 11.30am and queued behind 10 others but got in before they had to "close the doors" until people start finishing up.
The wait was probably longer than outlets in Japan would allow but being the first round and several orders to fulfill before ours but hey, this is Australia...
We had the Ramen Oh and the Yuzu Ramen. Noodles in the broth were slightly gluggier than perfect but the noodle refills (kaedama) were much better. The Yuzu was definitely sth different though I'm more of a traditional ramen person so I preferred the Ramen Oh. Would be keen to try the spicy ones in future. Both broth were very tasty, potentially bordering on too tasty(read: salty). The portions were much bigger than it seemed that we probably didn't need the second lot of noodle refill (2 adults, 1 child, 1 toddler).
Toppings were tasty and cooked perfectly.
Now, I can enjoy the Covid-free Canberra even more, being ramen-craving-free!
... As long as we sort out this queuing matter the next time we visit. Hmmm... Maybe I should just cut this back to...
Read moreMy local friend in Canberra highly recommended Ramen O to us and said it's A MUST to try while we are in Canberra.
This was the first time I tried Kyushu style ramen so I really looked forward to it and it exceeded my expectation.
We ordered: Spicy Ramen (Fiery): MUST TRY, 5* Yuzu Tonkotsu Ramen(Yuzu citrus & lime aroma): Another MUST TRY, 5*
First of all, I'm a fan of rich and creamy pork broth (over chicken broth, and over light broth) and I also like firm chewy noodle. To me, my spicy ramen really hit the spot. The pork broth is rich in flavor and is both savoring and comforting (love it). The straight noodles were firm and chewy and were were designed to complement the rich broth and retain their structure even when soaked in the hot soup (both thumbs up). And the Chashu pork, which was tender, flavorful and I super loved the slightly charred on the pork too, that elevated the taste profile to another level :)
My friend ordered the Yuzu Tonkotsu Ramen and I love the Yuzu taste, it was so REFRESHING and she loved the Yuzu Ramen a lot.
We were both super satisfied with our ramens and there is no doubt we will visit again next time when we are in Canberra. We have to make sure that we don't arrive on a Sunday as Ramen O don't open on Sunday! Canberran are so lucky to have such a top class...
Read moreRamen O is located on the first floor of a building next to Westfield shopping centre. The google rating is considered highly rated outside the Canberra city centre, but does it live up to the rating and reviews by others?
Ramen O mainly serves ramen, so if you’re looking for sashimi, udon, tempura, donburi you will be disappointed. The restaurant is small with a max capacity up to 30 guests. There’s no Japanese decoration, just a minimalist black & white interior. The atmosphere is great always packed, service is fast, however the food is just average. We found the ramen very salty, so intense that it lost the original flavour except for the curry ramen.
Pricing was quite expensive ranging between $18-32 a bowl that doesn’t have much in it and the noodle quality didn’t taste good either. The kids menu includes a small bowl of ramen (without protein), 2 pieces of gyoza and an apple juice for $12.
If you’re looking for something warm to eat during winter, Ramen O is probably one of the favourites in Belconnen, but don’t expect...
