We Came Hungry, Left Astonished (and Still Hungry)
The young waiter who spoke to us first was kind, helpful and told us if we came back in 15 minutes he’d easily have a table for us for four people. We were hungry but very happy to wait especially as we had not booked. We went for a walk and came back as he said and when we returned, the older staff member (presumably the manager or owner) ignored us for at least 5-10mins before even addressing us. It’s a Saturday night, we’ve all worked in hospitality, we get it! All good, we’ll be patient.
He finally addresses us and in a falsely-friendly moreso passive aggressive way, told us he had bookings on the way, so while we could sit down at a table, he would be with us in about 10 mins (3-4 tables out of the maybe 8 total tables? had emptied in the time we’d be gone and no one was hanging around waiting to be served but us). We said, great! No worries, happy to sit down and we’ll look at the menus etc.. 10 minutes have passed, the man has not so much as even looked in our general direction (let alone served us table water or maybe taken a drink order - more money for your business and hospo 101 to keep patrons happily waiting).
15 minutes have passed, he has cleared one table which had left while we were on our walk, taken one payment for a meal, sat one couple down with menus and for the rest of the time, stood and barked orders at the younger staff member who was actually working.
Nearly 20 minutes have passed, we are sitting there ready to order and he still hasn’t looked at us, so I got up and again, stood and patiently waited for him to look/speak to me. I was genuinely friendly and was just hoping for him to let us know when he’d take our orders and without hesitation he snapped saying he told the man I was with that we would have to wait as there were bookings coming. I explained I was aware and we were happy to wait, but that it had been a while and we were wondering how much longer. He stormed over to the table and immediately started asking the man in my group if ‘I knew the story’ and ‘knew we had to wait’ which - if he had’ve just listened to me - of course I did and I wasn’t actually complaining.
It was honestly just very strange behaviour, so we got up and left.
Safe to say we are locals and will not be returning to this restaurant, nor would we recommend anyone else bother either.
The rudeness was uncalled for and ultimately detrimental to this business as we had a fantastic experience at the Mexican restaurant further...
Read moreWe visited Papi's the night before father's day as we wanted to celebrate father's day far from the usual buzz of Brisbane northside. We were beautifully welcomed by Adan with his joyful Mexican greeting and given the choice of sitting indoor or outdoor. We chose the outdoor table for the pleasant Redcliffe sea breeze and pretty restaurant lights. It was quickly set up by the friendly staff member who gave us plenty of time to go through the menu that seems short but very detailed. After scrolling we asked the staff member some advice and she wisely suggested to have some entrees as she understood we were excitedly hungry. We had the fresh house made guacamole and a basket of beans, cheese and corn. It was so delicious that we almost fought to clean the bowl! My daughter was looking forward to try authentic tacos and she ordered Chicken Tacos that exceeded her expectations. My son had the Oaxaca Style Huarache with pork and loved it while I had the exquisite Enchiladas Verdes with slow cooked chicken, so good that the delicate taste of the lime combined with the meat stayed with me all night long. My husband who was given an original sombrero to drink his Corona beer, really enjoyed his Enmoladas. We were so happily full but made some space for the dessert that we shared: a big bowl of vanilla ice cream topped with Eggnogg liquor (Ronpope) made by the Nuns of Puebla and the Mexican classic sponge cake soaked in a mix of three milks. In all honesty this last one made me remember of my family's birthdays when little and looked forward to my grandma's or auntie's cake. So we beautifully celebrated the night, dining at Papi's Mexican, experiencing authentic food and warm welcomes that awaked our memories and made us feeling like the food was prepared just for us like if we were invited by a Mexican family in a...
