Ordered a salumi platter: bread was nice, prosciutto alright and the rest was tasteless, very nice pinzimonio. The young lady looking after us was amazing, making sure we were looked after, she was engaging and friendly, helpful and accommodating with all our requests, so the service was excellent.. but rating a restaurant isn't based just on service: food is the main focus of the night, and unfortunately after big expectations we got very disappointed. I ordered fettuccine all'amatriciana: the sauce was not too bad, tasty, they used bacon instead of pancetta and the pasta was just breaking under my fork, I don't know if because overcooked or badly 'filata'. My partner ordered a pizza and it was sooo bad: american thick overloaded pizza with just random stuff in it, there wasn't a crust, as the toppings were up to the edge. Our friend ordered scaloppine and they were just two tiny pieces buried by this tomato sauce and with a potato and pub side serve of broccoli and green beans. Drinks were good: cascade cold and nice and delicious wine! When we went to pay we split the bill and the waiter after splitting the whole amount overcharged my partner of 40$. A mistake obviously, but wasn't nice. As an italian I feel extremely disappointed and almost offended by what they offered at this venue, don't go there if you want some authentic food, but if you are content with average overpriced food...
Read moreDa Angelo’s was recommended to us from one of the locals. This person spoke highly of this place, stating the pasta is fresh and sauces are cooked to order. So naturally we had to give it a go.
I ordered the fettuccine Alla Panna (a cream sauce with bacon and mushroom) and my partner ordered a pizza with the lot.
The fettuccine came out with a tomato based sauce (not what we had ordered). The pizza came out looking like it had been sitting there for a while.
I mentioned to the waitress that the fettuccine she brought out to us was not what we had ordered, she acknowledged that I was right, made up some lame excuse that she had lost the plot and then took the pizza and the wrong pasta dish away, only to bring back the same pizza and the pasta this time with a sauce that tasted a lot like carbonara 4 minutes later.
Now this place is apparently known for their fresh pasta and sauces cooked to order.
So now what feels like the wrong sauce with our fettuccine and a warm pizza has lost all its glory. The pizza had anchovies which I can not stand. Perhaps if the menu stated it had anchovies we could of said NO anchovies. Instead the menu states a little bit of everything. As for the pasta it definitely lacked sauce.
The venue was noisy you could barely have a conversation with the person next to you.
Definitely...
Read moreWe landed in Hobart and within 90 minutes we were at Da Angelo's on a particularly cold, wet and windy October day.The restaurant is unassuming from the exterior with a very small frontage. Upon entering there is a pizzeria area along with some bar stool positions to dine on pizza in the "front of house". We were there for a little more. What I found interesting as we waited , was the interaction between staff and guests. There was a real positive friendly dialogue, The restaurant IMO reflected a 1990's style, but a really warm and homely feel. The staff were wonderful, took the time to explain the menu and provided some good recommendations, some of which we followed. Really friendly and down to earth. I went the whole hog, with the gnocchi con scampi followed by the Scaloppine Masala and my wife had the Pollo Picante. OMG did the chef just create the gnocchi for me? It was actually Nonna who freshly made the gnocchi that morning. I have never had such light and tasty gnocchi before. The food is excellent, the staff are excellent and it has such a warm family ambience. Will go back in a heartbeat. Word of advice, make sure you book, as the locals already know and frequent this restaurant regularly. Thank you to the team for one those true epicurean...
