Went there at 2pm on a Thursday in September, and the pie I ordered pastry wasn't cooked enough, sorry, it tasted raw still, it wasn't the brown cooked colour, it was light colour pastry. Was takeaway so could not go back. However the filling in the pie was very nice. Lamb and rosemary, can recommend this pie if the pastry is cooked properly. I think maybe I just chose the wrong one that day.
The orange cake is not good. At all. It's the worst I've ever tried. Please change the recipe. This cake is moist but it doesn't seem moist due to a sugar syrup. It is just really flavourless and mushy wet cake. I could not eat it. Can not taste ANY orange flavour or sweetness at all. Please change the recipe. Try the Italian semolina or polenta cake recipes, and add a lot of finely grated orange zest into the cake and more sugar, let the cake get it's moisture from soaking up the sugar syrup as in the usual traditional recipes.
The lemon meringue mini tarts were lovely. Those are great.
The staff were mostly wonderful. Lovely Latina lady giving excellent service. But a different Aussie staff member while I was trying to decide what to get for a minute or two, she seemed annoyed that I didn't know right away. Then I got to the counter and she said "so you know what you're having now?" in a bit of a passive agressive tone 😅 she also looked real annoyed while getting the things I wanted. Three items all takeaway.
But I think mostly they were just super busy. If you're busy and the customer is not ready, it's totally fine to walk away and come back. If we need time to decide, we don't want you to feel like you have to stand there waiting for us to choose, plus it puts pressure on if the staff are there looking at us like "you ready yet?" I was considering walking out as I felt uncomfortable.
Edit: ok so I just read some similar reviews about the staff haha. My experience was with an Aussie lady in her 30s maybe. Please realise that you guys have a LOT of items. People are just going to take a minute or two to decide. Can't do anything about that. Go do other stuff and come back. We don't mind waiting at the counter for you once we are ready to order. Customers can be annoying, but you're supposed to treat each one like the first one, and not like you've been annoyed by people for years haha
Manager/Boss: what are you doing about this? A few reviews now and many more would have noticed and not reviewed. Need to talk to your staff and have a no tolerance policy for unfriendly or poor service. Unless the customer is awful to them, then that's a different story haha, but this is happening in daily normal interactions and it's probably costing your business. Or at least making...
Read moreAfter reading good reviews for Jackman and McRoss we eagerly made our way across Hobart to try it for ourselves. Our basic review is that the service we received was rude and the $68 worth of pastries and treats we purchased actually were very disappointing. L On arriving, I ordered a ham & cheese croissant straight up knowing that it would take longer than other items to heat up. We proceeded to look over other choices when the woman serving us (blonde, stocky build) asked what else we would like. I made it clear that we were still deciding and mentioned that I'd only ordered the initial croissant as it needed more time but the lady stood waiting, looking unimpressed. As my partners children decided what they wanted, I added to our order but again the lady snapped whilst rolling her eyes. We then felt rushed to make a decision whilst the woman serving impatiently waited with a very sour look on her face. I again stressed, can you please just give us a minute as we weren't in a hurry and we were choosing several items. A far more pleasant Asian lady took over but we were so put off by the initial rude woman that the experience had already left a bad taste in our mouths.
After leaving, I felt so upset that I actually re approached the woman and relayed that her service was quite rude. In her defence she relayed that she had coffee to make but I had made it quite clear that we weren't in a hurry so she we could have called her back when we were ready to finalise the order. I pointed out that the first item I ordered was the last item we received so there was merit in my strategy. On sitting down to eat, we found the croissants dry and quite flat. We regularly dine at Lune and Agathe in Melbourne where the croissants are always light with distinct layers and simply amazing so in comparison, Jackman & McRoss croissants were very ordinary. I also had a savoury chorizo pastry that was dry and tasted so bad I ate a 1/4 before putting it in the bin. Overall, extremely ordinary but the initial service just destroyed the...
Read moreSo not just another bakery!! Just walking in is sensory overload...the fresh breads, inspiring pies and pastries, deluxe patisserie and dessert items....how to decide when EVERYTHING looks, sounds and smells so good??? And the staff dont help at all when they say, with complete honesty, that its ALL good. Fair point!
We opted for the Lamb and Rosemary Pie, only because the Scallop and Wallaby Pies were already sold out. No matter, our Lamb pie was AMAZING. Hero of the Day was definitely the Duck, Cranberry and Walnut sausage roll...WOW!!!! We also couldnt go past the Blueberry creme Patisserie Tart, but to be fair there were so many choices that narrowly missed out on being devoured. As an added bonus, I suggest taking your goodies around the corner to Arthur Circus, and enjoy the peacefulness of the quaint little park as you eat.
Best Bakery in Tassie? Easily. Best Bakery in Oz? Gets my vote. Im already thinking about what to have next time...
OK well this didnt take long to require an update. The lure of Tassies finest bakery was too strong so we managed to squeeze in a sneaky visit on the way to the airport. Let me say that Wallaby and blackberry most definitely go together, particularly when engulfed in magnificent pastry! Similarly Apple and Sage are wonderful accompaniments for Pork when rolled in pastry. My only question....do they ship to...
