My husband, sister & cousins met up to enjoy a lunch together. We chose Beechworth, knowing what a beautiful, historic town it is, regardless of what season it is.
Beechworth was very busy with groups of tourists, couples, and individuals out enjoying their day.
Unfortunately, we couldn't believe how difficult it was to find a hotel serving lunch. We found pubs that were open but not serving lunch. Others were closed altogether.
Finally, we crossed our fingers and walked into the Nicholas Hotel, cautiously relieved to find they were serving lunch. We arrived a little before 12 and were greeted immediately.
As there were no other diners in the large dining room, we were surprised to be asked how many were in our party and whether we had a reservation.
It wasn't long before it all became clear. The dining room filled with diners.
Having been disappointed by meals I had been served at various types of venues over many years, I have to be honest and say I'm at the stage where I'm almost shocked when I enjoy a meal out, and cant believed they've been prepared by 'professional cooks/chefs' for paying diners.
I am a pretty good home cook, so I have been amazed and unhappy when I am presented with a meal, prepared by people being paid for their culinary skills only to find the food far from enjoyable. I would be embarrassed to serve such meals to anyone, let alone paying diners/customers.
What a wonderful surprise to be served a well presented, delicious meal!!!! I asked everyone in our party what they thought of their meals, and without exception, everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal.
I was so impressed I actually walked over to the bar before leaving to ask a front of house team member to thank her and ask her to pass on our thanks to the cook/chef for the well presented, enjoyable meals.
Based on our recent and first experience at the Nicholas, as we live hundreds of kilometres away, I hope I get another opportunity to enjoy another meal, service, and dining environment at the Nicholas Hotel, Beechworth.
Thankyou again to the owners of the Nicholas for offering a quality dining experience in an establishment that reflects the historic atmosphere...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreService and atmosphere was good. Ordered the black board special the $30 prawn curry as I am a bloke with a decent appetite the portion was disappointing. As the lovely elderly lady the owner asked if we enjoyed our meals ,I explained the portion was very disappointing. The curry had no vegies the prawns were no bigger than a ten cent piece all nine of them a small side of rice. The temperature was ok I liked to blow on food before eating but this was not the case here. My wife had the chicken Kiev that had no wow factor but sarcasticly said she got full on the chips. The owner offered another meal I declined. I hope she got something out of my constructive criticism. She said she had never had any complaints before, but she treated my views with respect. The trend of many pubs having this attitude with small portions will keep me away and I will spend my hard earned coin on meals that will satisfy me. Leaving a pub then askimg someone were the nearest pizza parlour is pretty ordinary. My bill was $101. Felt I was taking advantage of but what I can do? in the future I will avoid not only the Nicholas but to express my opinion that we are entitled for fairness as business is to...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMy wife and I had dinner here and finished up with food poisoning and vomiting the next day. We can pinpoint the source of infection, as my wife had not eaten anything all day until dinner, where she had a pumpkin vegetarian dish with salad leaves etc. I shared a small portion of that meal. My wife notified the hotel by email. Without any response after some time I posted a negative review stating that we we were not able to continue with our wine tasting trip. The response from them stated that they had tested the food at an independent laboratory which did not show any contamination. They said that the review could harm their business, was defamatory, and if I did not remove it they would proceed with further action. I responded to this veiled threat of legal action by stating that they could not possibly have tested the same food, prepared by the same staff, under the same circumstances. Rather than continuing a pointless ongoing dispute in an act of good faith I removed my review and asked that they refund us the cost of the meal in return. Their previous aggressive response was followed by...
