My My My! Where to start... I must note Ammos' waitresses were courteous and polite, their service was appreciated. Further, the restaurant provided a humble atmosphere and the food was inviting. Positives aside, the reason this review has earned its one star rating is because we had an expectation, plain and simple. As stated on the menu, our mains of 'chargrilled lamb cutlets' and 'fish of the day' were supposed to be accompanied with 'lemon potatoes'. What we received instead were ordinary fried chips... essentially fish and chips. We were not informed about the change prior to ordering and were shocked once we realised we didn't receive what we expected. No staff asked if we were satisfied with our meal and we were genuinely confused if we had received the correct order. As we scanned the restaurant, other patrons had received these so called 'lemon potatoes' (which we were looking forward to I might add), not potato chips. Upon payment, we were asked by the bar man if we were satisfied with everything, so we queried whether we were correct in our assumption that we were served the right side to our meal. The bar man then asked another staff member (presumably the owner), whether they had run out of 'lemon potatoes'. The owner turned to us and said very rudely "you came in late, we tried to get you a table and we didn't have time to tell you", as if it were our fault. Bearing in mind we arrived at 7:45pm... the restaurant closes at 9:00pm. We may not have been bothered by the menu change if we JUST had some prior knowledge. We also called up twice before arriving to make a booking, but there was no answer, so we decided to try our luck by arriving without a booking. Staff made us feel like they were doing us a massive favour to get us a table without a booking, but there was a table for two set up ready and waiting. We were not impressed and it soured the evening to be spoken to like trash by the owner and made to feel guilty over nothing, when they should've simply apologised. In between ordering and receiving our meal, there were multiple opportunities for staff to inform us about a menu change, so the excuse that there was not enough time is bluntly put... an ABSOLUTE CROCK OF SHIVERS! We thought we were doing a good thing by supporting a local business and we certainly don't intend on returning, if that is how patrons are treated. What we do intend on doing is spreading the word about this calamitous eatery to Bayside City friends and locals. We should also advise anyone who is thinking about going here to stay clear. Do yourself a solid favour and try the lovely Baia Di Vino around the corner instead, that's certainly what we'll be...
Read moreAfter hearing about Ammos from someone on the radio, I thought I'd try it for myself. I remember the location from when it was Theo's (unsure, but i think the owners of Ammos MIGHT be the same people from Theo's).
It's a nice, spacious place with two entrances (in summer). If you come in through Station street, you're not entering near the kitchen, and that's where staff will greet you. We were taken to the table right away and given menus and offered waters and given the QR codes to scan etc. The ambiance was nice; they play nice Greek music, and the entrance to the bathrooms even look like the entrance to a little house on one of the islands or something. The one thing I hated were that the chairs were hard and uncomfortable (which can become a problem if it's a lengthy dinner), but I guess this is just nitpicking.
We chose off the menu, because no one told us anything on the specials board, and when we asked about the specials, we were told about ONE dish only amongst all of the things on offer. I got the Tarama and pita bread and both were good. There was a lot of Tarama considering the small portion of pita, but it was tasty nonetheless. For mains, I got the Chicken Gyros and that was quite good too. It comes with some pita and dip (so maybe choose something different for entree) and it's meant to come with potatoes. Plural. When the meal came out, there was half a potato, cut into two. That was pitiful, and had I known, I may have ordered a side with the meal, but ... I'll know for next time. Even though that was all quite filling, I wanted to try their Drunken Pear for dessert and that was also great.
Overall ... while some things were out of whack proportionally, the food was really good. The service overall was good and some of the staff were really quite friendly. It's family operated (I believe). Parking can be a little tricky (as it's across from a train station), but we went around the block twice and then found a space.
Would I come back here again? Yes, I would. It is good for more casual meals, and good to come with either friends or big family dinners. It absolutely scratches an itch if you're...
Read moreI recently visited Ammos Greek Tavern. Wow!! The first thing that caught my eye was the classic decor and the divine Hellenic archaeological artefacts that adorn the walls. Stunning original copies from exhibits of Greek museums, complete with authenticity certificates. I fell in love with each of them. I got to share my dining experience with such beautiful pieces of Ancient Greek history. Well done by the owners! The food was in keeping with traditional, fresh, tasty Greek food. I had the Gemista (stuffed seasonal vegetables) and can I say it was the best example of Gemista I have ever had, dare I say better than my own mother's! The rest of the dishes my family had looked amazingly vibrant and packed full of flavour. Portion size was very good too so we definitely didn't walk away hungry,. Service was prompt and very friendly, a testament to the owners who pride themselves on providing the hospitality that Greeks are famous for. If you need to revel in true Greek hospitality and enjoy authentic Greek food I highly recommend Ammos Greek Tavern. Worth the drive if you're not a local and if you're a local lucky you for having a beautiful Greek restaurant right at your door step. Go visit Ammos Greek Tavern for some true Greek "Philotimo" and...
