I went to this place for the first time with my partner and her family last night as it was highly recommended but we will never enter this place again. i ordered a chicken and mushroom risotto and i sprinkled chili flakes and Parmesan cheese on it (TAKE NOTE), two bites into it i found a revolting hair on the peace of chicken so i showed the waitress straight away and she bluntly said i'm sorry we can make you another one or just subtract it from your bill no effort to offer anything to make me happy so being hungry i just said make me another. Here is the worst part, 5-10 min later another one comes out with a bit of a different presentation some chopped spring onion on top and a parsley leaf on the side of the plate assuming its a new risotto, i take a bite out of it and it all tastes like Parmesan cheese, i move the rice around and there is chili flakes in it, the cashews are burnt and the chicken is well over cooked which was now a very clear indication that all they did was re-cook the same risotto again and try to make it look different with chopped spring onion sprinkled on top and a stupid leaf which now angered me very much i felt as if i was being tried for a fool so i asked for the manager this time and i explained the situation to him and showed him everything i explained and called the original waitress and she apologized again and confirmed that is was the same one and just said i cant believe the chefs would do that etc. now at this stage you expect them to say we will give you a meal on the house or make you another for free after going through an ordeal like that for an hour but no, "we can make you another one or just subtract it off the bill for you " i was extremely angry and so was everyone else on the table so i just asked not to be charged for it and she just said ok, grabbed the plate and walked off, i have never felt like crap in my life to be at a restaurant or have received such service like this either , my family, partner, her family or anyone i know will never be dinning...
Read moreChapelli’s is virtually an institution on the South Yarra’s Chapel Street. Whilst hundreds of restaurants have come and gone, this 24x7 gem still draws a decent crowd for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner or late night meals.
Service is prompt and courteous. Meals are quite reasonably priced by Chapel Street restaurant standard. Mains $25 (+-) $5 - I had the most expensive meal, a 300gm Porterhouse Steak. They were very accomodating when I ask for no roast potatoes but extra salad. I received a steak and a huge salad. Inside you will find a wide selection of cakes, that many like to take home with them. I had the apple strudel with ice cream for desert.
If I had to be very very knit picking I would say that although the steak was generous in size, perfect medium rare and heaps of self poured sauce, it was a tiny bit chewy, it didn’t detract from the meal, still great. Similarly I liked the apple strudel with the vanilla ice cream but the apple chunks were rather large. I personally like apple strudel to have smaller chunks with more spices, but as I said before still great, just being very knit picking.
Four people, mains and desert, plus a few rounds of drinks came out to $250. Not bad at all. My friends had pasta dishes and steak sandwich, all agreed it was a great and generous sized meal.
The semi-enclosed street side heated seating is refreshing, particularly on a chilly day. Very comfortable. Inside was even more busy, I noted everyone seemed happy (staff and clientele) despite the weather getting colder and overcast.
I love to also go for their morning pancakes. There are a few pancake options that are nice sugar and gluten rush in the morning. Or you can got for a traditional big breakfast with the lot.
So regardless if you are having breakfast, lunch, or even a 2am meal after a night out on the town, you cannot go wrong with Chapelli’s.
Happy birthday to my friend :)
Also they accept AMEX but no splitting bills. Which was...
Read moreThe food is always delicious here, and being one of the only restaurants open late on a Tuesday night, I frequent this restaurant after belting my lungs out at choir on these weekly nights.
My favourite so far has to be the salt and pepper calamari, the salmon salad, the Calabrese pizza and their mix berry cheesecake is the stuff of my sweetest dreams. The succulent and juicy calamari over a bedding of rocket, drizzled with balsamic vinegar, it's a match made that rings all sorts of bells in my mind of somewhere to eat that has the sounds of luxury and prestige whilst being family friendly.
The times I've been there over the past year, service is always interesting at best, my friend and I think they are severely understaffed so when we arrive and sit out at the table, most of the time water is not brought to us, so we have to wave at the waiter to get their attention.
Other than that the food is excellent, the atmosphere can be a mix sometimes, I once had an aggressive lady who was a customer comment on our private convo like she was listening in, whilst my friend doesn't really care, I felt that ruined the vibe of a rather nice evening enjoying a meal with a friend, so given the locale, you might find yourself being accosted by some junkies from the suburb.
If you're eating here alone on a business trip or just a tourist, put in your noise cancelling headphones, put on Canon and enjoy the tasty food whilst avoiding the rambunctiousness of the...
