Had a 12 hour layover in Melbourne before flying back home to NZ so I figured since I'd never been I'd take a bus and give the city a look. Little did I know that I would have one of the most fun nights I'd ever had. Immediately the vibes between the both the lighting and the music we're classic rock and roll. The two Bartenders working that night, Lotus and Corwin we're the absolute best, easy and fun to talk to and helpful in assisting me in picking out what to drink and giving me some music homework to listen to back home! As someone who isn't usually a heavy drinker (and had just had cheap airplane orange juice mere hours before) they made sure to hook me up with some Soda Water so I didn't spill my guts out. Honest to god a 10/10 night and has sold me on going out to bars more often and on Melbourne as a place to live in the future (If the actual walk around the city wasn't enough!)

I visited on a Monday and the bar was open til 2pm which is rather crazy to me coming from a country where everything closes at 12 usually. The night started slow but ramped up towards the end with more and more people joining in! I hear that their shows and weekends can get pretty lively and hope to see that myself one day! Already itching to return once I got the cash to visit Melbourne for more than a few hours! until then, 10/10, Best case scenario of getting drunk in a city you don't know is winding up in a...

Appalling. Been a regular for 7 years, have always supported the venue heartily and introduced dozens of new people and bands to it, remaining a regular since 2011 whilst doing photography for many bands and artists at the venue. Cherry has been a big part of my life and the memories I've shared there are hugely important to my youth. Made a fb comment today on the venue's status that was taken way out of hand, I meant it as a small critique/advice for next time and not the huge insult it was taken as. My comment was that it would have been good to know that the JET gig was only going to be a quick set, not a full gig it was promoted as, because I drove in 2 hours and wouldn't have come if I'd known I wouldn't make it in time to see any songs. No big deal I was just a bit miffed to miss one of my favourite bands. But the owner replied "No pleasing some people" and then deleted my comment after I wrote back saying I was a regular and how I was genuinely upset by his blase and cold response. Sounds silly and smallfry but it was just a rough way to treat a regular who has been coming there before that guy even owned it. Don't want to support Cherry anymore, no loyalty for...

Visited the place a few times and always had a good time. However, a recent incident involving theft left us a little baffled. Worse still, was that it was perpetrated by one of the staff at the bar. We were sitting in a corner, when a person randomly grabbed the cap off one of us and ran out. My friend had to give chase outside the bar, confronting the person to return his cap. The person who stole the cap then returned it and confessed that she thought my friend had stolen the cap from her friend and was getting it back for her. She then apologised and confessed that she works at the bar itself. While it makes for a bizarre story with a neutral outcome later, it’s really unsettling that patrons of the bar could be attacked anytime by workers as a form of vigilantism. What if my friend was intimidated, or too drunk to give chase? Or if it lead to a more dangerous/confronting situation that turned violent? It’s really quite unprofessional, and the bar needs to take more responsibility in ensuring patrons are not made to feel unsafe...

Seeing the reincarnation of a bar I frequented in another location so many years ago is heartwarming. The feeling is different, but I suspect the overall outcome for live music is similar or the same. I rolled in on a Monday night at about 9 pm and missed the last muso for the night. Clearly, the place was packed, with standing room only. I will return for the full Cherry Bar experience on my next visit to Melbourne. Venues like this just need to be supported because of what they do to a city. Melbourne is still a shadow of its former self and arts and culture took a beating. So it is good to see a once defunct gathering place, back up and running in a post-covid world. I'd highly recommend supporting and frequenting a bar like this because you don't know what you've got until it's not there anymore.

My friend and I ended up at Cherry Bar, one of the few spots open in our area at the time. The place had a lively vibe, practically bursting with energy from street level, which piqued our interest. Once inside, we headed upstairs and found the crowd to be older and grungier than we anticipated, and the noise level was simply too high for us. I ordered a vodka lime soda but left before I could even finish it. A local band was playing; they weren’t bad, and there was a good crowd on the dancefloor, but everyone had to shout to be heard over the deafening music. Honestly, this bar wasn’t a good fit for me. It caters to those who appreciate rock and grunge in a less polished setting. If that's your scene, you might enjoy it, but it wasn't for me, hence the 2/5 rating!
