I know China Bar is a chain, but this is some of the best tasting Chinese in Melbourne. Let me describe the perfect night for you. You go out to a gig, have a fantastic time, then on the way home you stop in at China Bar Fitzroy. You get the peking duck pancakes, vegetarian spring rolls, honey chicken, and China Bar fried rice. While you wait, you can have a beer. Then you begin your epic journey home. You walk down the street to catch an Uber but they all keep cancelling on you. So you walk about 10 minutes and then you’re able to get one. On the way to the Uber you eat the peking duck pancakes and spring rolls, both of which are delicious. By the time you get home, about an hour has elapsed and you’re thinking you’ll have to microwave the food. You open the bag and… the food is still piping hot. That’s how fresh their food is. You eat the honey chicken and fried rice, and it’s some of the best honey chicken and fried rice you’ve ever eaten. There are whole prawns in the fried rice, and there is sauce to tip over the honey chicken. Afterwards, there is still another serve of fried rice for the morning. How can I describe a perfect night for...
Read moreIf i could rate it lower then 1 star I would.!!! My partner and I came to Fitzroy on Labour Day and whilst there were a number of restaurants closed, China Bar was open along with the Mexican and Pizza place across the road. We ordered quickly and sat outside waiting for the entree. After a while we noted that other diners who had ordered well before us, were still waiting for their orders. It appeared that the staff were too busy with online orders and therefore diners had to wait an inordinate amount of time. Eventually, after 30mins, the entree and one of the mains arrived. We continued to wait for the other main and two diners near us had lost patience and were questioning staff. After a further 15 mins my partner enquired as to the whereabouts of the missing 2nd main. The 2nd main finally arrived and it was basically, overcooked BBQ pork, badly cooked rice and bland bok chuy. The 1st main was just noodles, and 3 prawns struggling for relevance. DO NOT BOTHER WITH THIS PLACE as it suffers from: rude staff overpiced food not fit for a dodgy food court The 7/11 further up the road would be better value and definitely...
Read moreI visited China Bar yesterday and had an extremely disappointing experience. I ordered my favorite dish, Kang Po Chicken with rice, but instead, I was served a completely different chicken dish. When I asked about it, the staff insisted that it was the same, but after showing them a picture of the dish I always get at other restaurants, they admitted that they couldn’t make the authentic Kang Po Chicken because “Sichuan peppercorns are too expensive.” Instead, they altered the dish, which was incredibly frustrating.
To make matters worse, the chicken I received had a strange taste, almost as if it hadn’t been washed properly. My boyfriend ordered a pork dish, and he spent the entire day in the bathroom because of it.
When I asked for a replacement or any form of solution, the staff were unhelpful and refused to accommodate me, leaving me stuck with a meal I didn’t enjoy at all. I do not recommend this place, and if I could give a negative rating, I would.
You can see in the picture how the dish I was given was completely different from...
