I live next door to the Code Black Coffee Roaster’s HQ, which situated in the upcoming and trendy area of Brunswick. The building is black with several white and one golden circle. On top of the entrance it says in capital letters “YOU HAVE ARRIVED”. That was the reason why I went there to drink my first coffee after my arrival in Melbourne. I enjoyed this first coffee in Australia, a washed Kenya from the Komothai Kirura washing station. The design of the building is minimalistic and raw; a great combination of black painted bricks, metal, natural polished stones. This time I went for a full brunch, and ordered a filter coffee, to start with. When the coffee arrived, its aroma stroke me immediately. ETHIOPIA URAGA WINE PROCESS ANAEROBIC FILTER. Normally, I am not a big fan of experimental processing methods, but this coffee was clean, with an intense sweetness, a complex, well-integrated acidity, an oily, coated texture, bold body, and a lingering aftertaste, and intense flavors. That was an amazing start. To eat I asked for the breakfast roll – bacon, fried egg, aged cheddar, house ketchup and aioli, tomato, lettuce on ciabatta. The presentation was beautiful, and it tasted great. All ingredients were well balanced, and the sauce gave it a magical touch. In Europe, it is very rare to see blends in specialty cafés. Here in Melbourne, it seems to be more common to serve blends as a house espresso. Therefore, I went for a flat white with their house espresso blend: 3056 ESPRESSO BLEND. 3056 is the postcode for the Code Black Roastery. It is a medium roast. The flat white was super sweet and smooth. Again, the milk texturing skills of the barista were amazing. And the espresso cut well through the milk. To round up my excellent experience, I ordered a Lemon, ginger, and mint fizz. I saw another client enjoying it and could not resist the tempting presentation. It was refreshing and mouthwatering, just perfect for a hot summer afternoon in Melbourne. All baristas and team members were friendly and served me with a great smile (under their masks). Thanks a lot. I am happy to come back and taste some more single origins.

Always, always busy I don’t think there’s a time where either myself or a guest have attended and it not been packed. Code Black is gorgeous, whoever designed the location has a good eye for detail and what makes a location memorable. The place is huge. With two seperate eating areas, a visible kitchen area, the roasters partially visible- its big. The downside to the sheer size and the popularity means that if you come here you’re probably going to have to shout at whoever you’re with. It can get very very loud. The food is a touch too expensive, the prices feel a little exorbitant for what you receive in terms of quantity however the taste is there and for this reason you can’t complain too much. The coffee is hit and miss. There’s two baristas here that do amazing coffee every time - serious bearded guy (manager?) and the young Asian female (Co-manager?) they make strong delicious coffee. Other coffees I’ve had from baristas there are iffy at best and downright weak at worst. However I will keep coming here because when I get a good one it’s amazing- such a good blend that they use as their house. Have never tried their single O’s but am keen to. Be prepared to hunt a waitress. Normally you’re looked after well but last two times I’ve had to sit for 5-10 minutes then go find someone. They’re so busy this is sort of understandable though. Great place- do attend.

At the front of the building is the bold statement "you have arrived", like this place is the destination. Inside the dark, hip decor is the roasting house and cafe that locals flock to on weekends. Today I'm grabbing brunch at an odd hour, but there were still quite a few people enjoying the brew and the bite. Because I don't know what a Menemen is, it was instantly the dish of choice. As I waited to be surprised, it came in the way the hot chocolate was served. In the tall black mug, there was enough rich, foamy, not too sweet, lip-licking hot chocolate for 3 cups. Not to be outdone, the Menemen was two burst in your mouth eggs baked with tomatoes, peppers and egg plant, topped with yoghurt and accompanied by a warm piece of flat bread. The ample seasonings give this Turkish dish (thanks Google) so much flavour and warmth that is reminiscent of the Shakshouka, which I love. Staff were friendly today, which was pleasantly different from my previous visit. May be it's because it wasn't busy, but the smiles make all the difference to round out a good experience.

Visited here on two occasions, for breakfast, and then for a quick coffee. Can confidently say that the coffee is what you would benchmark Melbourne coffee against. The modern, clean and polished Cafe is situated in a side street off the main run of Brunswick. The parking is street only, but a supermarket parking less than 100m away makes it pretty easy to visit. The service on both occasions was excellent. With kind and professional staff being helpful on both visits. The coffee was outstanding, and the food was worth every cent. The prices are reasonably high, but the taste and quality justifies it. The beans are roasted next door, which definitely helps as the coffee tastes fresh and smooth. The open window kitchen is a nice touch, where you can watch the chef make your food, and the Barista create your coffee. I would definitely recommend eating here instead of just a coffee visit, the food was quickly served, well presented and tasty. A great business.

This place is an absolutely joke. Coffee was average, the food selection is atrocious! We went a midday and the lunch options were so limited! It was pretty much a breakfast menu and a chicken dish and a Ruben sandwich. I ordered the Ruben Sandwich… the taste was fine, however $27 for a tiny sandwich, with no side of chips or anything… please view photo. That was not all, kids menu is eggs on toast or a pancake. They don’t even sell bowls of fries/chips. So my 3 year olds had nothing to eat, they would have been more than content with a bowl of chips.. serious the only cafe in Melbourne not to sell chips! When asked if we can just have toast with butter, the waitress replied a straight “no”. I should have known there was something not right about this place when there were more staff then customers..

Unfortunately just another organisation thats lost its passion for what it really should be doing; COFFEE. The passion has lost itself to either the barista thats working on a Sunday getting double time & has zero care for the coffe3 being served or the organisation just doesn't care anymore because the clientele is constantly there Grabbed a Magic this afternoon from the store. 1st sip of the coffee just about summarised it. Milk overheated & extra hot. Coffee extraction was really poor. Pretty much a milked down coffee. Pretty disappointing CBCR You need to get back to your core and do what you've been doing best for years; COFFEE Don't let the greed take over your business
