Glenferrie Hotel — Restaurant in Melbourne

It is 3 star hotel (as classified on booking.com) but it charges 4 star prices.||The official hotel website advertises "no prepayment needed" as does booking.com and the fine print says if there is no credit card provided a $250 deposit is required. Which is fine.||However, when you arrive at the hotel you are advised you have to pay for your hotel room in full upfront. And the rate is often $226 a night (it can go down to $188, which is still overpriced for what you get) which means that for a four night stay you have to pay almost $1,000 upfront. We were advised they charged the full amount on arrival as reception is open irregular hours so it is more convenient for the hotel to do it this way. Also, it means you cannot change hotels if you are unhappy. My payday was the night before I left so my spending money for the trip was spent on my hotel room.||We chose this because we were at a conference at Swinburne Institute of Technology and it was walking distance. But we quickly found out that no-one else we knew from the conference was staying there, citing that it was too expensive. And it was a long way from the city if you want to do any sightseeing.||It is a very basic and very clean hotel room in a pub. I liked the room but it was very plain and had not been done up, though the carpet was fairly new. The free Wifi kept on dipping in and out so I used my own portable WIFI. No gym, no breakfast provided, no microwave. Just a jug and toaster. No mini bar, nice teas and instant coffee. Just small cups, no bowls, (so can't have breakfast cereal), and no tea towel so you can easily re-use cups.||If it was $130 a night, I'd be very happy. It is worth that, maximum $140. There were much better places around that were much cheaper. Others in our party airbnb'd as it was much cheaper.||On the bright side, the staff were very good and pleasant,...

Woah! What a damn gem of hotel. Firstly this place is CLEAN. I’ve worked in pubs, hotels and luxury resorts both in front of house and behind the scenes and I know a CLEAN venue when I see one. This one was spotless. Not even as much as a speck on a mirror or dust bunny under the desk - just goddam spotless. The crisp white manchester was perfect. Also this place is SPACIOUS, the high ceilings, huge corner spa bath king sized bed all look small in these generous rooms. I must also mention the huge shower head and near boiling hot water in the bathroom were both huge pluses and welcomed after a long interstate drive. Then we get to what really makes a stay memorable, the STAFF. I had the easiest of checkins after having booked my stay online. The friendly female staff member Misty took me through the key don’ts (don’t loose your swipe card and don’t smoke/vape in the rooms) which was essentially all I could process after a 9hr car drive - perfectly easy. On my second day I mentioned to Jason in reception how impressed I was with the cleanliness of the place and he was also very friendly and easy to deal with. Both staff members I spoke to actually looked at me, listened and responded (sounds so simple but so many hospitality staff don’t do this). I held my 21st birthday celebrations here and I couldn't speak more highly of the venue and staff. I was initially quite overwhelmed when I started trying to organise everything, but all of the staff were so incredibly helpful in assisting me in the leadup to the event and on the night. They also replied to all my emails, inquires, and questions in a very timely manner. As soon as you walk in, the building already has so much charm. We were located in the back beer garden which is very spacious and is beautifully decorated with fairy lights and fake plants. There was plenty of space to both sit and stand, in addition to having a large area for dancing. The retractable roof over the beer garden was fantastic because we could close it enough to keep the heat in but still have it partially open since it wasn’t raining. Throughout the night, I received so many compliments from friends and family about how lovely the venue was and how much they enjoyed the food. Another very big thank you from me and my family for making my 21st birthday as memorable and enjoyable as it was.
