Hoffman's Road Fish & Chips — Restaurant in Melbourne

Made the decision to stray from our local on a fri night (in hindsight, should have chosen a quieter night). Customer service was friendly and was told 50 min wait time (also fine considering it was a fri night). What I wasnt expecting though was quite honestly the worst batter ever. It tasted old, rubbery, flavourless and very heavy/stodgy. The fish itself was lovely but completely ruined by this awful batter. Potato cakes also ruined by this horrible batter. I attempted to peel the batter off and just eat the centre but sadly realised that the potato centre was undercooked and was almost raw. November 2024 caught up with the team at Hoffmans Rd Fish & Chips, still great F & Cs - one of the best in Melbourne. The team behind the counter are always friendly and good for a chat about the footy - go bombers! It is an Essendon/Niddrie icon. I have been eating their F & Cs since the early 1960s (started young) up until I moved interstate several years ago - sorely missed. The business has been around since the mid 1950's and the quality has been ever so consistent. Plus it's right next door to the bottle shop. As Macarthur said - I will return... for...

An institution in Niddrie / Essendon, easily one of the best fish & chips going around! Owners are so so friendly and know all their customers by name.

Quality fish & chips, never greasy or oily. Quantity of chips per $ bought seems to be small but need to factor in they are thick cut. Never disappointed with Hoffman's Fish & Chips!

Note: this is a very busy fish & chip shop, sometimes so busy that the phone rings off the hook. When that happens, I just go and place an order in person.
