*edited because of bad experience. The food is yum and I had a great experience last time, but this time...terrible customer service.

The wait staff were obnoxious and rude and didn’t seem to like that we had such a big group. I would have thought that was a good thing considering we booked. There was some confusion about a set menu, however the waiter spoke to us very rudely because we had ten people and apparently should have known.

I was so close to leaving, given the attitudes towards us and the fact that they put us on stools. I hate stools. It’s not comfortable at all.

When it came to the bill, they were quite snippy about the fact that we wanted to split the bill between us. On our last visit, they told us they could do that easily and that was one of the main reasons we came back.

The only reason I have left a couple stars is because of our previous experience.

Previous review: ————————————————— Yum pizza, yum gnocchi, super yum salad. Warm, cozy, good food, a little pricy.

The salad was super crisp and quite tasty, would definitely have again.

The gnocchi, while yum, was quite a tiny tiny serving. Ordered enough of everything else and it was quite tasty, so wasn’t devastated but the serve was a bit of a joke.

We ordered the special pizza. Can’t tell you all the ingredients because I can’t remember but it was tasty.

I was a little annoyed about the wait staff trying to clear the table before I had finished my meal. It wasn’t that busy either.

What made the experience really great though, was the fact that they split the...

This spot absolutely hits the mark. From the moment you walk in, Matto oozes good energy, great vibes, awesome tunes spinning in the background, and a warm welcome that sets the tone for the night.

But let’s talk about the real star: the Calabrese pizza with nduja. This one hits different - rich, spicy, and perfectly balanced. The crust? Charred to perfection in the wood fire oven, with just the right amount of bite. Every element of the topping felt thoughtfully placed, and the flavour combo was downright addictive.

We kicked things off with the antipasti, which was surprisingly great value - generous, fresh, and a perfect way to prep the palate. Washed it all down with a bottle of Prosecco, which played beautifully against the spice of the nduja and the smokiness of the crust.

It’s hard not to give Matto a 5/5. This is pizza done right, with soul, skill, and seriously high-quality ingredients. A must-visit for any Melbourne pizza lover.

Update May 30:

Second visit and it just keeps getting better. The salsiccia pizza was next level, juicy fennel sausage, sautéed Italian broccoli, bold, balanced flavours on a perfectly blistered base.

Elena and Vincenzo (the new owners) are bringing real heart to the space, warm, family-style hospitality that makes you feel instantly welcome.

And the vibe? Pumping. Great tunes, buzzing energy, and that lively, local feel that turns a good night into a great one.

📍Matto Napoletano Pizzeria, CBD - 4.6 ⭐️ out of 5. I last visited here when it was still named SPQR (see it’s feature on my best pizza in Melbourne post from a little while ago) and although they have changed name, they definitely haven’t changed in quality. The wood fired pizza here was exceptional, all with a thin base, generous toppings and sauce, and well cooked without being burnt. We had the: ➖Olives ($10) ➖Garlic bread ($8) ➖Margerita pizza with buffalo mozzarella ($30) ➖Capricciosa pizza ($32) ➖Hey pesto pizza with grilled eggplant, pesto and pine nuts ($32) ➖Funghi pizza ($32) ➖Mortadella pizza with straciatella and pistachio ($32) Although they were all delicious, my favourites had to be the hey pesto and mortadella pizza!! Absolutely get these if you come. We also had some delicious wine and the staff were absolutely lovely. A couple things to note - it was a little difficult to read the menu off the chalk board, I think having some menus on the table would help. The stools on the table we were sat at were also fairly uncomfortable and extremely heavy, it required quite a lot of effort to pull them out to sit on. But all in all I had an exceptional time and will absolutely be back. Overall 4.6 ⭐️ out of 5. [Not sponsored/invited].
