Insta: melbfoodie_mark YT: MelbFoodieMark ** Check them out for more food reviews in Melbourne! Grabbing Banh Mi at Nhu Lan after copping some Cannolis from T Cavallaro next door is a validated one-two combo in Footscray. You just can't go wrong with that.
You know it's real when you see a queue of Asians waiting outside to grab a banh mi DURING COVID. They are literally risking their lives just to have some sandwiches. Mad respect. Glad to see some like-minded people who got their priorities straight.
Oh and their run-down menu. Just pure alpha, asserting its dominance. Got nothing else on it but Banh Mi. "This is what we have. If you don't like it, screw off" type of confidence. I like that - No frills, No BS, No distractions. Just keeping it classic. For $5.5 Banh Mi, you really shouldn't expect service. Low key I enjoyed the indifferent dispassionate attitude of the ladies working there because you know they've been working all day pumping out these delicious bad boys.
I ended up grabbing their BBQ Pork Rolls because that just looked most authentic. Now, I am not Vietnamese and haven't had enough Banh Mis to tell you what's good or bad but here are some notable pointers. (1) Bread was crunchy but also fluffy inside. Banh Mis I had elsewhere always scraped against my palate but not this one. (2) Their BBQ Pork tasted very different in a good way. Maybe it was slightly cured? I don't know but I am assuming that's how the authentic BBQ Pork roll's supposed to taste like. Definitely wish I grabbed more than one as I devoured it as soon as I got inside the car. You know I'll be back...
Read more"best banh mi in Melbourne"??? Nah more like "WORSE Banh Mi in Melbourne!" Like many people, we came here is due to the hype of their Banh Mi and their many positive reviews (which btw we have no idea how they got them! We can only assume that they changed management and became money minded and stingy, therefore no longer caring about their quality of food and customers). What a SHAME! And for all those recent 5 star reviews... Either they are all fake or real people who have dead tastebuds and have no idea what a good Banh Mi really tastes like.
Yes, we all had their "famous roast crispy pork banh mi"... Firstly, their bread was soft and stale; their "crispy pork" was soggy, chewy and tasteless; we asked for extra Pâté (extra 50c) but none of us could even taste any Pâté!! Yes, all the negative reviews are true! They are so stingy, we could barely find any pork! One of us was lucky to find 3 pieces!!! What the HECK! They are even stingy with their veggies!! What a total disappointment and disgraceful place this turned out to be.
Cross Nhu Lan Bakery place off your list and avoid it like the plague, unless you like to throw away your money and love the taste...
Read moreBad Service I’m a Vietnamese and today i went to this bakery to buy a soft pastry. I toke one pack and went to the cashier . The cashier was so rude, it doesn’t mean because i’m a student and i’m a Vietnamese so i don’t deserve to be treated nicely. She stared at me for a while when i was checking my purse to hook money give to her. She told another staff who was standing next to her “ Take “ con này” $4” Ok, let me explain , “ con này” in Vietnamese doesn’t mean “ her”in polite way. It’s an informal and “slang” word to call someone . As a customer i was mad because i was called like this. I’m not a mean customer, i just want to Be treated politely and respectfully. I’m Vietnamese and i’m accustomed with the calling way like this but it’s just unacceptable when i’m in Melbourne( a beautiful and has polite people ) and be treated like this. I hope this bakery can conceive how they could serve customers generally eventhough it’s a well-known bakery...
