During a recent visit to Omi at Chadstone, I encountered a mix of both commendable and disappointing elements. The culinary highlights included the medium-rare aburi salmon and the delicious soft shell crab, which stood out for their preparation and taste. However, these positives were overshadowed by several drawbacks.
Firstly, our menu choices were significantly limited due to the dairy content in many items, as informed by our waiter regarding their dairy-based mayonnaise. This revelation led us to opt for plain fries after the preferred Umami fries were unavailable. Additionally, the dish execution faltered with the udon's overpowering saltiness and the unexpected presentation of the soft shell crab, which differed from the menu's presentation where the sauce is served on the side, but arrived drizzled on top. This prevented us adjusting the salt level to our preference.
The dining experience was further hindered by the lack of cellular reception (Telstra) at our rear-end seating, coupled with the absence of a physical drinks menu, and slow service, which made ordering beverages unnecessarily challenging.
While certain dishes at Omi demonstrated culinary promise, the overall experience was marred by several service and food execution issues. It's unlikely that I will revisit, considering the more appealing options available at neighbouring...

Food: Disappointing. I went to Omi with my mother and we ordered a wagyu don. The food came out quickly however the rice was lukewarm and a bit crispy, like it was scraped out of the bottom of the rice cooker. This was surprising as steamed rice for the dish is what we would be expected - rice is such a basic thing to get right for Omi, especially since reading through their menu (showcasing their mention of awards and dedication to excellence) sets the bar very high. The presentation of the dish also looked quite different to the beautiful photography. The bowl we received had all the wagyu piled up on top, rather than presented with care (like in the photos). Things felt like it was served in a rush.
Service: This was good - we mentioned the issue to the waitress who swiftly provided us with a replacement and consulted with her manager. Service was friendly and efficient.
5 Star Rating in exchange for a free drink: This is problematic. It's unethical practice to try to get a 5 star rating from customers in that it will likely sway people (who may honestly give 4 stars) to increase their score and lead to an inflated score which misleads other consumers. What about asking people to give an honest review instead, so that transparency is upheld as a value for...
Read moreMe and my partner went to Omi on a whim, as we saw their menu and how good the photos and presentation was.
Turned out to be THE WORST Japanese food we have ever had in our lives.
We both ordered the Wagyu rice bowl, one with teriyaki sauce and one with black truffle.
The food came out too quick, so quick that we questioned its freshness to be sent out that quick. The meat tasted off, and was completely inedible, for wagyu it should melt in your mouth, this was like eating rubber. the black truffle sauce that was put on my dish had to be the most disgusting sauce, it completely overwhelmed the rest of the dish. The whole dish with the egg and flavours were so overwhelming and did not work at all together.
We both had 3 bites and walked out. Bear in mind the food looked NOTHING like the dishes presented on the menu.
Also a service fee on their QR ordering app. What a joke. Completely overpaid for such a horrible, low quality and stupid dish that left the rest of our day ruined.
I would recommend going to bakers delight instead of here, as my Cheese and Bacon roll was 100x better than what was served to us at OMI.
