Oh man, was this a bad experience.
I can see why they are pushing hard for signage on the main road, because of their terrible location. To be honest, they probably are in the right spot for a souvlaki business of this standard. Far, far away from Oakleigh.
I entered through to their enclosed waiting area where I'm greeted to poorly written signs saying to "decide what you want before entering". I can understand we are going through a pandemic at the moment, but this is done in such poor taste. Maybe it was the lack of grammar, which I can understand to some extent.
Before I can even go inside I'm already hearing screaming from the lady at the pass, to all the staff. Word of warning, just because you say it in Greek, doesn't mean no-one will understand what you are saying.
When I went inside to order, i was greeted by her and a dozen A4 size paper with random notices advising of the store policies. One being "some of us have an exemption to not wear masks". Of course it was the main family members of the business that seemed to have been exempt, while the Non-Greeks were doing the right thing. To be fair, some Greek members were wearing masks. It just happened to be strapped around their chins, below their mouths and nose instead.
To the order, "what would you like?" I would like the Nick the Greek Lamb souvlaki. She starts screaming to the cooks, " lamb souvlaki!". It was this moment, I was predicting the order to be stuffed up, as they have 3 different lamb souvlaki options on their menu. Which of course I ended up with the wrong one. (Not to know this until I am back home at my dining table).
Not only did I get the wrong order, for some reason I was charged $15.25. The fact she gave me the wrong product meant, I should have been charged $14 to match it. I assume I must have missed one of their multiple signs to tell me, because you want to pay via card and your our customer, I'm going to pass on the EFTPOS fee from the banks. I mean, why should a business have expenses... It was either this or it was related to the sign, " we are going to charge you are fee for having a reusable bag, if you don't want a bag, let us know before you order". Another mind blowing notice from this business. Well, I received my souvlaki, but it didn't come in a bag. I guess the $1.25 will go to their pension fund when it is time to shut their doors.
This whole review could have been saved by the most important part, the quality of the food itself. Well, it was as good as their customer service. Opening up the foil to a plate full of lettuce. Buried under that was some burnt and well over seasoned lamb. This brought me back to my childhood of eating those dodgy so called souvs from your local chippy, back when there was no understanding of what a souvlaki should be as a young child.
The only saving grace was the pita! This is was the only thing that was done right. Unfortunately though, not even the pita could hold against the triple stuffed lettuce and onions, which made it tear in my hands. Lucky I was at home to eat it, so I could convert it into an open platter of salad and some meat.
I guess I have learnt my lesson. If I want a real Greek souvlaki, just go...
Read moreThis was our first visit in a few years. The once bustling and vibrant restaurant is now a rundown take away shop. Upon walking in, we were greeted by what do you want? No warm welcome by the lady/owner. We brushed it off and just thought she was having a bad day. There was no menu on the wall just paper pamphlets at the register. The lack of detail and pride in their work absolutely astonishes me, and how could a once great shop get to this stage. My husband asked a few questions about what happened as we haven’t been in so long, and next thing you know we are being scolded by her, defending her now rundown take away shop. At this point I wanted to gtfo and never come back, but my husband insisted to order as it once was good, how bad could it be now. Well let me tell you. The entrance is recycled cafe tables with mismatched chairs, looking like they have been rescued from a 70s hard rubbish collection. Hung over the banisters were dirty coffee bags with dead blow flies on them, accompanied by a nice thick layer of dust and dirt. Inside was a storage yard of coffee equipment. Taking no pride in their appearance, shuffling around the shop dragging their feet, and stinking of cigarette smoke. Upon ordering, we were asked if we would like cheese or chilli in our souvlakis. My husband opted for cheese as I went for the chilli. After being barked our name from outside that our food was now ready, we persisted to eat on the dirty tables, with no high chairs for the young ones mind you, and found the chilli was an excessive amount of chilli sauce not fresh chilli, and the cheese was Bega slice cheese, not melted or shredded, just slapped in there. Instantly tasting my chilli lamb wrap, it turned out to be inedible from the amount of sauce there was. Gagging at the table, while my husband watched on with his sliced cheese was a sight to see. Less than 2 minutes later, the food was in the bin and we went to trusty old Guzman to pick ourselves up some edible food. $45 for two souvlakis and a coke no sugar. What an expensive bottle of coke that was. The once bustling with a great atmosphere and food is now a rundown business, who takes no pride in their work or shop. There is no wonder there isn’t a 15 staff team anymore, nor a raging family friendly atmosphere, where you would go out of your way to visit on a Friday and...
