I don't know where the other photos came from but let me share the ones I just took of my Porchetta sandwich from Saul's. I took them just seconds after I'd cleaned up the 3 tablespoons of fatty oil that ran out of the bag and down the front of my clothes. The bottom bun was soaked in fat which suggests it was sitting around for a while - which is likely given my order was presented to me very quickly. It certainly looked like it had been prepared a long while before lunch and wacked in a microwave. That's not how they make a sandwich in a New York deli.
For the princely sum of $16.00 I got barely even one slice of pork (it didn't fully cover the surface area of the bun). As for the comte cheese - I can only surmise that someone worked out that its too expensive to put Comte cheese on a sandwich and still make a margin. It appears they took this reasoning one step further and stopped putting Porchetta in too! In fairness - maybe all the fatty oil that has stained my shirt and jeans is really just melted Comte - we'll never know. I know things are tough but at $16 a sandwich I reckon they could afford to put more meat in the sandwich and at least some pretend comte.
On the plus side, I did get a lot of silver beet soaked in tasty oil (maybe cheesy) fat and the top bun was great, great bit of bread.
Was it tasty ? Yes it was - in a distinctly un-porchetta'ish way.
If they want to pass themselves off as a purveyor of $16.00 New York style sandwichs then a good place to start would be to make actual New York style sandwichs.

Read moreThe hottest sandwich shop in town, Saul's Sandwiches @saulssandwiches ! Saul's Sandwiches brings the heart of New York’s delis and diners to Melbourne's south and we're so stoked that they are now open in Hawthorn. We tried: 🥖 Eggplant Cutlet (buffalo mozzarella, aioli, red peppers, broccoli rabe) 🥖 Chicken Parm (Capicola Ham, Mozzarella, Pecorino, Basil Napoli). . We thought the parma is a bit ordinary - it is no different than the parmas you find in pubs/hotels except it is wrapped in a sanga style. The combination of Mozzarella and Pecorino cheese is pretty nice as it gives a rich, cheesy, and creamy taste to the sanga. If you like parma then we're sure you'll be liking this one too. . On the other hand, The Eggplant Cutlet with buffalo mozzarella and roast peppers is simply outstanding. It boasts humble but complex flavours. We really like all the elements in this sanga, highly recommended! . The shop we went to on Glenferrie road is always busy so make sure you get in early especially on the weekend. They also have weekly specials so there's something new to try always. A must-try if you...

REVIEW: Located inside an area with lots of shops, Saul's sandwiches is also an iconic Melbournian sandwich joint. I love that they cut their sandwiches in two, which makes it perfect for sharing!
Smoked Pastrami was the best flavour. It's wonderfully smoky and chewy while encased in a warm toasted bread... it's like a warm hug. The kale and cabbage slaw is perfect in making you feel like you're having a slightly healthy sandwich as well.
I would pass on the Tuna Melt. Although they mixed the diced calabrain chilli into the tuna mix (which suggests it's made fresh!), it just felt like something I used to eat in the mornings from the can. I guess I'm also not a big appreciator of Tuna.
There's no seating in store, but if you walk down the block past Kori Icecream, you can find some public...
