Street Taste - Carlton — Restaurant in Melbourne

We decided to see what the hype was about this wonderful new place that had infamous Mexiacn Birria Tacos & Sandwiches!

The restaurant’s atmosphere was great! We sat down looked through the menu and made our selections. We went with the fish, shrimp, brisket ($8.9ech) & birria tacos ($19) and shared the birria sandwich ($28).

Our food gradually came out every 5 mins 1 taco at a time which was annoying. None of us were eating together at the same time. Upon the initial first impression of these tacos were so simple that the tacos I make at home have more appeal, taste and culinary qualities. The taste was overall bland with high saltiness which was such a shame. The fish batter was fried dark brown, very thick breaded and over cooked. The shrimp looked the same as the fish and served on a single taco with just green cabbage and an over load of sauce which overpowered the whole dish! The brisket taco meat was tender but lacked flavour, this was garnished with onions and coriander.

We were hoping the sandwich was going to be better but unfortunately this wasn’t the case.

The all mighty birria sandwich was small in size nothing special! The meat was tender but lacked the glorious flavours of Mexican bbq! The bread was soggy on the plate side down making it fall apart when trying to hold/dip into the birria sauce. The birria sauce was soggy salty that the other ingredients (onion, coriander) were non existent!

Our waitress was very nervous though her engagement with us and even tried taking our plates from underneath us as we were mid session eating “think food in hand, taco still on plate, food in mouth and she’s trying to clear the table. This happened twice! As you can imagine we were stunned!!!

I wish I could say more enjoyable things about our experience but this...

Beef brisket tacos 10/10 Tap water 10/10 Side salad 2/10 Anything chicken 3/10

The beef brisket tacos are sooooo good!!!!Full of flavours, full of moisture, the hard shell tacos also have a nice crunch!! Will be coming back for those :)

Bathrooms upstairs are nice and clean, hands were covered in delicious grease, napkins didn’t make a dent.

Sadly, everything else was a miss. The salad on the side is sad. Some limp pieces of lettuce and leaf of spinach.

Customer service was also a miss, the staff seemed poorly trained? Probably not being paid enough lol

Any of their chicken dishes taste disgusting, I don’t know what they do to that chicken but it doesn’t taste fresh or good sadly. Just nasty.

Overall disappointing….but the brisket tacos are worth every dollar!

Sorry for the bad review but the current rating is misleading. I was starving and saw the glowing reviews and spent so much money on sad food (except the brisket tacos) then had to go to woolies to get some more food, and eat a handful of mints to get the taste of the chicken out of my mouth.

Ya’ll don’t realise how NASTY that...

Fell into the hype of seeing those saucey birria tacos on the gram iykyk! Host was awesome super accommodating and making sure we were comfortable. Servers were, well a bit undertrained and made various mistakes throughout the night with the few tables around us. Gotta start from somewhere though eh!

Food wise - tacos were pretty average on the whole, they were tasty enough, not as flavourful and sauuuucey as the videos make them to be. As for the other dishes the mates got - ribs were alright, fairly tender but missed the bone - I think they just didn’t have bone attached but to me that’s not fair to call it ribs 😆 the bone is the highlight! Didn’t even realise that Mac and cheese was a complimentary that came alongside until we were nearly finished with the ribs…could’ve been without tbh, probs the most flavorless, flour-y tasting mac and cheese I’ve ever had. Fairly average in the grand scheme of things - we’re from Auckland so we on the lookout for birria tacos comparable to nz broke boy tacos!! Frozen margarita was fairly yummy though!
