We first visited Sun Wah in 2017 and were impressed by the high culinary standard. Since then, subsequent visits have been fine, but nothing memorable. Fast forward to my mum’s 60th today, and it was a disaster from start to finish. By far, the worst dining experience in recent memory.
We opted for the 8-course Feed Me banquet, which was extremely overpriced at $85 per head given the shockingly poor quality we received. Aside from the Pork and Duck Croquettes and Prawn Toast, everything else was downright disgraceful:
Sashimi: Two tiny, limp slivers for each of us. Sichuan Wagyu Skewers: Bland, drowning in a gloopy mess of sauce, with meat that was tough and clearly old. Duck Pancakes: More pancake than duck – barely any meat. Fried Rice: Cold, stale, greasy – tasted like it had been pulled straight from a fridge shelf, complete with fridge taste. Even the peas were dry! Sizzling Beef: Tender, but again ruined by a sauce that tasted like it came from an open fridge. Salt and Pepper Squid: Completely over-salted, virtually inedible. We left most of it. Dessert Plate: Pathetic portions for a party of four, and honestly, I have had better brownies from the ALDI cake mix.
Everything tasted as if it had been sitting around for days. Sun Wah is clearly living off its reputation in Mordialloc, trading on their family-run gimmick, but this is nothing more than cynical marketing to bait locals into mediocre, overpriced meals. It is especially egregious given the difficulty families have in finding the money to dine out in this economic climate.
With the restaurant almost empty the whole night, it seems we were the only suckers there.
To top it off, Clifford, the manager, had a loud, uncomfortable rant at his waitress, Nicki, during payment because he struggled to apply the Entertainment Book discount on the till. It was an awkward, unprofessional end to a thoroughly miserable evening.
Avoid this place at all costs. I'd rather eat a frozen...
Read moreRun away do not even enter this place. You will be robbed of hundreds of dollars for leftover food that tastes like the fridge. If you want to pay $85 for reheated food that tastes like the fridge, then go ahead, come to Sun Wah. This was our experience. Multiply the disaster by 4 people receiving these garbage scraps, passed off as award-winning, delicacy food. To add injury to insult, it was the place I chose to celebrate my birthday.
The "courses" were tiny and they ended up using them to dupe us and multiply their profits. The crudo ended up being 2 x 20¢-sized pieces per person – thin micro-pieces that looked like they were scraped off some scraps.
Everything tasted like the fridge. The rice was reheated as well. The squid was coated in salt; we had to remove the entire coating. The toast looked like bread ends and it was so tiny it was like scraps.
We paid for 4 people and received servings for only two. It was extortion. Worst of all, we all went home feeling like we had been robbed and I spent the entire rest of my birthday apologising to my guests for dragging them over to this local business I sought to support.
This was one of the most painful restaurant experiences I have had in recent memory, and we paid a premium for the insult. Where is the zero star button. My rating is zero. Massive fail and intentionally luring people in to take a lot of money for absolutely disgusting food.
I will never set foot there again and will be telling all my friends and...
Read moreWow! My husband and I love Chinese food and we are always on the hunt for a great Chinese restaurant. We have tried so many, even the very expensive places at Crown Casino. I can honestly say that Sum Wah gave us the BEST Chinese food we have ever had so far! We were 💯 blown away! Not only with the food either! The service was top notch as were the cocktails! The food is so fresh! No fatty and oily dishes! Each course just impressed us so much! We went on a Sunday evening so it was nice and relaxed. Apparently Saturday nights are insanely busy so if you've never been before, maybe don't try them in such a busy peak trade. Go on a Sunday and let them wow you! They will NOT disappoint! I definitely recommended the bao buns and soup dumplings, but the prawn toast was a knock-out as we had bevwr had it like this before! Hubby's chicken curry blew his mind and my sweet and sour pork was out of this world! The batter was thin and crisp, but the pork inside was so succulent! Amazing! We also had dessert! Hubby had the creme Broulee and I had golden gaytime fried icecream. It has such a delicious butterscotch sauce. I recommend rolling the ball of icecream in the sauce so it soaks up every drop! Delicious!!! We highly recommend and cannot...
