The Mordi Canteen — Restaurant in Melbourne

I seldom write Google reviews, but the experience my daughter and I endured at the hands of the manger at The Mordi Canteen was certainly a motivator.

To kick off our experience, we watched our waitresses serve patrons that were not dining in the cafe and when asked would you mind if we grab a glass of water she ended up serving water to a totally different table.

When ordering coffee, was 20 plus minutes from order to arriving at our table which was a precursor for things to come. We waited another 25 minutes to be served and another 50 minutes for our dishes. What was brunch was now lunch.

While my daughter’s dish appeared appetising, my dish was anything but. They poached my eggs until the yolk was hard, sour dough bread was stale (not sour dough) and bacon cooked to resemble something that you step over if you saw it on the nature strip.

To top off the mistake we made simply by being at this cafe, we were met by a manger that was not only despondent to her customers, but dismissive to her customers concerns. This woman could not manger her way out of a paper bag, let alone run a cafe.

I can confidently say that I was not alone with our experience this morning, with one table saying that they awaited 45 mins to only discover that their order had been lost.

Shocking service, food that is well below standard and just dinning at Modi Canteen sets off thoughts of self harm.

So if you’re into being abused and suffering a chronic bout a dysentery, then Mordi...

My experience echos. Disappointing, not worth the money, most certainly not on weekends.

Highly recommend just walking 10metres further around the corner to the other friendly, affordable and well serviced cafes.

Three arriving for 1pm lunch. Weren't offered menus or water for the first 10mins. Staff are young and didnt seem too interested in servicing paying customers.

Food then took 50+ minutes, we were only 3 of 8 in the entire cafe. Lukewarm food.

During our time there, another couple returned coffees not up to standard and another table following up the seemingly unreasonable food wait times.

No split bills would have been a courteous thing to remind us of upon arrival, understand if not possible during peak and rush times. There was only 8 of us in the venue. Such a shame, as it seemed great by viewing the menu.

Edit: The owner will continue on to then gaslight your review in an attempt to right the situation. I called YOU to book. You never had my contact number. This is embarrassing really. I wish you could have responded professionally instead of personally.

It is a shame to spend precious money in such a tight economy, supporting local businesses to then have this as the response. A more diplomatic and empathetic approach would have been more...

When brunch looks this good only @themordicanteen not just they have nailed the presentation with every single breakfast and lunch dish but the ingredients and flavours in it are just gonna make you feel next level happy and content.

What we had:

To India via France, mildly spiced chicken mince on toasted pumpkin sourdough with smashed avo, roasted spring onions and leeks bechamel gratinated with cheese, sumac onions, fried eggs, black garlic bbq emulsion

Trust me it was divine, so packed with amazing flavours, you wanna come back for this again and again. Must try.

The Mordi Canteen Benny, the flavours are absolutely different from regular ones, and this one is much better and different taste wise, definitely enjoyed this a lot. Highly recommend

Smash my avo, once again classic but with such twist of mind blowing yet comforting flavours to make you fall in love with it, absolutely gave a flavourgasm! Must try.

Coffee is great too and we had a strawberry matcha as a Mother’s Day special on their menu, it was so incredibly refreshing to drink.

Service is very prompt and swift even on a busy weekend, and the staff here are all very welcoming, friendly and attentive. The food is of excellent quality and generous serving size as well. Totally value for money with such high quality ingredients...
