It is kinda trash. Would I go back? Probably not; especially with all the great alternatives just down the road in Mordialloc. I kind of sound like a Karen, but it needs to be said. The venue use to be the Mordy HQ, which was dated, had a weird layout, and served nothing special for the most part. Now it has a brand new name, but still needs to do a lot more to win over anyone. Have there been some renovations - yes, which is great to see. Are more renovations needed? Definitely. The epsom still somehow feels like a time warp back to 1975 when I walk in with the trashy carpet, dated furniture, lack of booths / diversity in seating, and the redundant cabinet that is the centrepiece of the room. Nothing in the room makes you think, this is going to be a good experience. The staff were polite and attentive, which is great. Then came the meals. In order to test a place you have to try the basics, so I ordered a parma. The food wasnât terrible but it wasnât standout. I couldâve ordered the same parma in any dingy pub across Australia. Does it compare with the sporting globe just down the road? Definitely not. Overall, just a big ~ meh. I thought Iâd give it another chance with the rebrand, but it seems like the owners just donât get it / donât have the money or donât have the vision. I would much rather get a meal from Ok Billy, The Sporting Globe, La Cabra, Rococo, Immi Dumpling etc which are all just a few hundred metres away. I want the Epsom to succeed, but they need to look at the area, the gentrification and standards, and what itâs become if they want to really get customers through the door. All until 10.30.... Went to the bar... another friend had just arrived(he was baby sitting!) So I went to the bar to buy him a 'short' to sip on while we enjoyed the mild evening and views and a drambuie on ice for me.. and a bottle of pinot grigio for our other friends inside with the band! Barman (nice fellow and just doing his job I imagine) says... we don't sell shots after half 10... I said no this is for my friend to sip it is not a shot... (I was ordering a Johnny Black-a sipping scotch) Barman: we don't do shots after half 10 I could put a mixer with it? Me: No it is to sip... you don't put a mixer with Johnny Black. Ok... so I can't have my Drambuie as well as it is "a shot" Ok I say well can I have a Four Pines and a bottle of the Pinot Grigio then Barman: sorry we don't serve bottles of wine after half 10.... Me: You guys need to use a barman's discretion and see that my age 50+ self and my age 50+ friends will not be slamming down Johnny Walker Black in the corner to screaming words of "Skull skull skull" It is a sad reflection when you can't order a drink for yourself because some others may slam down cheap shots of whatever!! The "big screen" is a series of smaller electronic tiles joined together to form a video wall. Unfortunately, these tiles don't meet seamlessly with thick black lines interrupting your view... and there is lag from one tile to the next.
That aside, we ordered three meals for lunch. Shortly after ordering, the young barman advised us the payment hadn't been accepted so we tapped again. We then checked our bank account and saw that we had been charged twice. We raised this issue and were spoken to one of the managers who tried to tell us that the payment would only go through once because the first one hadn't been accepted by their terminal.
Almost 40 minutes later, we were still waiting for our food so I queried this at the bar. Coincidentally, we were told our meals were on the way out, so we resumed our seats. Two of the three meals were served and we were told the third was coming right out. It arrived almost 15 minutes later!
Before leaving, we asked to speak to the manager again, and got a different one. We told her the issues with payment and showed her our bank account. She took our details and told us she would reconcile the till at the end of the night, and call us the following day.
Two days later, having not heard from her, we had to ring them.
This all happened on a Saturday afternoon, and we only got one of our payments refunded today (Thursday)... no word of any compensation, free meals, drinks etc. Not even a "sorry" from them.
