The mains came, and Amy was able to place them with no confusion. The unfortunate taste of the decor was soon replaced by the food. The awful decor almost disappeared. Almost. The tackiness of the place never really goes away but the food was a great distraction.
I tired the veal, and was surprised at the quality of the dish. It was layered in sage, and a fine sauce. It was tender and easy to eat. Visually it looked terrific, small medallions of veil placed on packed potato wedges. The sage flavour was incorporated into the whole dish. A friend has been telling me about sage, but I didn't realise what she was talking about until this dish. I could taste it all the way the drive home.
My partner tried the lamb cutlets. There was no complaints from him. He was going to order something other, but we suggest he try those, as he would never really get them cooked at home. Nana tried the Chicken Cesar Salad. I was impressed by the look of the poached egg as it sauced the lettuce.
The food I could not fault, and the wait stuff were okay, but there is really only so much they can do in that self service, Amy ended up polishing cutlery just so he could enthuse to do (it is a boring job, but she kept them going.) So we never saw Amy after the main service. That was a pity as I wanted to give the tip, but I thought I would be trying to hard.
I recommend this place because of the food, the decor is hideous. A lot of old people go there, so I can only assume that it is good value for money. And Nana likes to play to pokies, so that is why she invited us there in first place. It would be a good place to take your parents. There is also a self service water station.
I can't fault to food (no one even used salt or pepper), though the surroundings are on the other side of pretty. Amy was amazing and I only wish she was running the floor (and would implement table survive..ordering from the table.) The decor is amusing to put it nicely. Get past visuals and intrusive TV screens, and I think it is a great place for a great serve off food.
With the quality of service, and the great food this place could only benefit from a make over. It is a Racecourse with 150+ years of history, why not make it feel like that. Instead there is just the remains of an 1980's renovation. The whole time I was there I don't believe I ever saw something that reflected the image of a horse. With such a rich history, it is a shame that the Caulfield Racecourse does not put it on display. If I am going to the Racecourse I would be nice to see something that reminds me that I am actually at the racecourse.
Even though I would never invite someone there because of the decor, I would eat their on the sly as the food was great. The wine is also expensive, at around $9 a glass. Considering there is a wine glut in Australia, this place should lead the way and offer relative prices. Overall, I think if they marketed this place the right way they could do wonders, but I guess they are more worried about the pokies. Tacky but some...
Read moreFor background, I was there about 4 years ago; One lady in my party and I ordered the Caesar salad - we were both sick from that (most likely it was the egg on top) - I was quite bad for a two days, but the lady who was with me had to go to hospital, and was there for a few days. I had not been back since, and when I was told that we were going back there last night, I was a bit apprehensive. Was able to get in without VAX cert. (I have one - but I didn't have it on me) Staff were very nice. Now for the food.... All of the food came out presented very nicely. Some of the meals my party ordered included the following: Chicken Parma, Chicken Schnitzel, Eye Fillet Steak, Chicken Burger, and I had the Veg Felafel Chicken Parma: Made of compacted meat - (same type as "nuggets" but bigger), meat was tough, tasteless, and the breading did not stick to it very well. Chicken Schnitzel: Same; Was made of compacted meat - (same type as "nuggets" but bigger), meat was tough, tasteless, and the breading did not stick to it very well. Eye Fillet Steak: Looked very nice, but smelt of e-coli (2 of the party detected the same smell, as it was quite strong), I could not bring it to my mouth when I was offered a try. The person who ordered it ate it though, as they could not smell it at all. Chicken Burger: Looked nice, but made of the same stuff as the other chicken dishes above. The person who ate this said that it was tasteless. (He has had a stomach ache from it the day after) Veg Felafel: Looked nice, on a bed of salad, however; the felafel looked like felafel but hardly had any taste, were mushy inside, and seemingly mainly made of mashed potato with some chickpeas and parsley. It was edible though, and as I was hungry, I ate it anyway. Not even close to authentic, but nothing else was wrong with it. A small sauce was served with it - Mayo... I would have expected some Tahini, but there you go. Overall, Meh, and overpriced. To serve that glued, compounded chicken product is an insult in a restaurant - there must be better ways to save costs. It makes me wander what else they are doing to cut corners. Would I go there...
Read moredue to a large group, i had booked over the phone and the lady was very accomodating due to my uncertainty of numbers that she advised to call a few days before to confirm. i had requested tables near the play area and it was ideal as the kids could go back and forth from their table. however, the food was very disappointing on my part for the price we had paid for. i had ordered the prawn linguini and the pasta was overcooked, and pretty mushy and tasteless. the fried calamari and salad was lacklustre. to expect that the food quality being in well-known establishment in Caulfield would be at least an 8 was wrong. i get that there was another function at the time but doesn't mean the effort in meals suffer. i felt ripped off here. i would rather go back to The Boundary or Springvale for some satisfying meals.
the above review was in 2023. today, we had attended a birthday in the function room. was an intimate room suited for about 70 guests. the catering came out on platters that were fresh and delicious and the room overlooked the racecourse. had access to the outside near the racecourse for fresh air and for smokers. hopefully, the kitchen has improved their quality of food and hope to come back for...
