During a recent holiday in Melbourne, we had the opportunity for me to indulge myself in a trip down memory lane. This saw us visiting Greythorn, in the outer suburbs, and we decided that we would grab breakfast before exploring my old stomping ground.
We had parked outside a nice-looking café and decided this looked like the place for a coffee and something to eat. It is called Travelling Bandit and we are so glad we picked this café as it turned out to be one of the highlights of our tour around greater Melbourne.
The ambience was cosy and inviting. It offered a variety of seating options. You could choose the sidewalk dining area and watch the world go by. Sit inside, grab the newspaper, and immerse yourself in a more traditional café environment or head to the courtyard at the rear of the premises. We chose the courtyard.
The wait staff quickly attended to our needs, and we were soon enjoying a coffee and our breakfast. The menu offered a great variety of your favourites and some more exotic meals to choose from. They also cater for vegans and vegetarians.
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at the café. The staff were attentive and engaging. The food was excellent and beautifully presented. The coffee was also excellent. It was a great way to start our day.
I would highly recommend a visit to this café, it’s a hidden gem. We will make sure we stop in again next time travel...
Read moreCame here a few days ago with my misses and two kids. Honestly walking by you’d think just another generic suburban cafe that Melbourne has produced. Tossing up between the Malaysian place two doors up and here, we rolled the dice with Bandit cafe.
From the moment we walked in the door, kids in hand and starving to death. We were greeted with warm smiles and polite staff (something that is sometimes rare in Melbourne in my opinion.) The menu is perfectly designed for the size of the place, small but has everything you need, brekkie and lunch options also.
We went for the cheese burger and fried calamari. (Was going to go for the chicken salad also, but as my misses knows me to well my eyes are bigger then my stomach.) Each dish that came out honestly was perfect.. we couldn’t fault a thing.
Presentation was spot on, And best calamari I’ve had in years (the fennel in the dish was awesome by the way chef well done) I noted to my parter that the cheese burger had lettuce and tomato on it which we both love! Even down to the cheese toasty that my three year old had looked and tasted lovely!
Few things of note, if you’d sell booze you would have made another $100 off me, and get bigger mineral waters!!
Thank you Bandit cafe for such a lovely and enjoyable meal. Our new...

This area of North Balwyn, it’s Greythorn really, strikes me as needing a bit of a lift, foodwise at least. Travelling Bandit looked like comfortably the best cafe option on a scan of both sides of this shopping strip (although I later spotted the Jolly Miller which is in a more secluded area off the road). The cafe has street appeal then and its moderately attractive inside too and almost cute. It also has very nice front and back open areas. Most importantly, the coffee is very good here. They serve a perfectly respectable brew that would be easily at home in any of the more fancied areas. The menu is said to be good too, I understand. The cafe was doing an acceptably good trade among all age groups while I was there. The staff dealt with the custom politely and efficiently. There was a hits mix on that was mainly 80s. It was inoffensive and quite pleasant after a while.
Nice place overall. A terrific option if you’re in this area. I’d happily return...
