Waxflower is a neighbourhood wine bar located just off Lygon Street in Brunswick. The space is crossed between a European wine bar and a Tokyo-inspired listening bar. It features 1000’s of records stacked on its walls and DJ’s spinning whatever they feel, not limited to any genre whether its jazz, house or soul. 🎶
Head Chef Dave Falvey serves up a hybrid of European and Peruvian influenced dishes which changes with the seasons, focusing on quality, local produce.
We began with a few cocktails, the Smoke and Haze and Good Morning which tasted like Jaffa! All entrees were a hit, the fluffy flawless focaccia as well as the fresh oysters and kingfish. The octopus was so tender! 😍
The mains were even more impressive, with that Beef Cheek being so incredible it is possibly the best I’ve had. The crisp outer and bold flavours, enhanced by the red wine jus. The Fish was beautifully presented, it was a whole fish cut up, fried and reassembled together. Both sides were also delicious. ⭐️
Can definitely see what all the fuss is about, the food here is amazing, as is the vibe. The only qualms we had were that the service was very slow and hard to grab attention. The music was almost unbearably loud, to the point I could barely hear my friends talking across the table. Otherwise, almost perfect experience and we will definitely return. Maybe to sit outside....

Between two adults we ordered the Waxflower ceviche: interesting combination with carrots and corn. Super fresh though. Brussel sprouts skewers: loveddd the chargrill and flavour on this one. Fried eggplant: tasted like eggplant chips, was missing aioli or a creamy dipping sauce to break through the oil but it was well portioned for a medium dish. Whole chargrilled market fish: usually I get steak if it’s on a main menu but the fish was INSANE 🔥 I didn’t even mind deboning it myself because the char and tenderness of the fish and the sauce accompanying it was divine. One of the best fish dishes I’ve had in a restaurant. Poached pear sorbet: the dehydrated pear was too hard to eat but the sorbet was perfection. Very fresh palate cleanser.
Would go back to try the rest of their menu for...
