I did a quick Google search for Japanese restaurants in the Midlands area and found a few of them. The reviews about Aki caught my attention, and it was quite interesting. So, we decided to visit for tonight dinner 12 October 2023. It's located right in the heart of the Midlands town area, easy to find. If you take Morrison Drive to Cosmo Lane, you'll be there in no time, and there's plenty of parking at the end.
Once entered, it instantly reminded me of those charming, cosy typical Japanese home-based restaurants in Japan. Not too big, not too small – just the right size. We were warmly greeted by the waitress or (not sure) the owner and promptly seated. Placed our order after few minutes of browsing. What impressed us was the speed at which they brought our food. It was ready in probably seven to ten minutes after we ordered – the fastest cooking time in Perth, I swear!
The taste was fantastic and reasonably authentic. We were delighted with the quality of the food and the service, not to mention the peaceful atmosphere. And the surprise at the end – the waitress offered us sweet rice crackers as a dessert. We'll definitely be returning and highly recommend this restaurant to all Japanese food lovers. It was a great experience!
5th June 2025.
After nearly two years, we revisited Aki Japanese Restaurant and were pleased to find that the high standards remained unchanged. The service was excellent, the food quality and taste were consistent, the efficiency and speed of service were impressive, and the overall atmosphere was just as warm and inviting as we remembered.
We also noticed some new additions to the menu, including assorted tempura, which I had the pleasure of trying. It was outstanding—crispy yet delicately balanced, unlike the heavier (hard) versions typically found elsewhere in Perth. It’s difficult to describe in culinary terms (since I am not a food blogger), but the texture and flavor were simply fantastic. I’m glad I decided to give it a try.
A special highlight of the evening was the thoughtful gesture from the owner, who offered us Korean-style seaweed slices (known as gim) during our meal and again as a light snack afterward. It was a delightful surprise and added a personal touch to our dining experience.
It was truly a lovely evening. Thank you, Aki.
One small suggestion: it would be even better if dinner service began at 5:00 PM instead of 5:30, allowing those coming from work to visit a...
Read more3.75 stars Has opened since 6/2022. Environment: a small shop located at the quiet inner side of the small Midland Village shopping Complex, facing fee payable carpark. Very causal setting. Simply decor with some mini Japanese animation figures and food photos. Door kept open, had a fly flying around us. Very clean and tidy every corner. Have a self service table. Go to the cashier, Menu on the overhead screen or take away menu next to the tray of used loyalty cards. Used Loyalty cards are kept by the shop (not the customers). --- 6.9/10 Service: a young lady is the only one server. Not busy at lunch time. She was nice and helpful. We are newcomers. She explained the use of loyalty cards. Find the card with my name from the card tray when we come again. I prefer keeping the card in my purse which can remind me this restaurant. She grabed the needed utensils and soy sauce from self-service table to our table. Drinks, Chilled Tap water and glasses are in the fridge. When we order one dish, she would shout the Japanese name to the kitchen at once. One man kitchen, food served fast. --- 7.3/10 Food: good presentation. Good price. Good value. Quality is ok. Wide selection of soft drinks, juices and water in the fridge. Ebi Bento Box, Large $15.9: large bento will have crispy Spring Roll (cut into 2 half), 1 Chicken Karaage, 4 pcs boiled Edamame and 2 slices of orange. There are 3 Tempura Prawns (normal size) and large portion of mixed salad and pickles. Generosity of Japanese salad dressing and mayo, but not too much. Salad and orange was fresh. Rice with Terriyaki sauce was soft. Plain chicken karaage was ok. I would like to ask for separating the Mayo from prawns next time. --- 7.5/10 Unagi Kabayaki Bento, Small, $13.9: Unagi, Pickled Ginger, mixed salad, picklescand 1 slice of orange served together on one plate/ round tray. The grilled sweet soy sauce marinated sea eel was good with Unagi sauce and sesame seeds, but without spring onions. --- 7.4/10 Pork Gyoza, $7.9/5pcs: Fried Pork Dumplings weren't so golden. Some wrappers were broken. Not so attractive. The flavor of the pork filling was...
Read moreAs someone who has been repeatedly trying Japanese food restaurants across Perth, Aki is a consistently great place to eat. The price is great to the quality of food and presentation and the service is always attentive, friendly and comfortable. I always order a chicken dish usually as a baseline to test the food and Aki did not dissapoint with a good cut of chicken, great breading and great pairings with the side dishes such as fruit, edamame, pickled radish etc. (in the large bento's). Aki's Ramen and Udon are quite similar to those train station Ramen shops I've had in Tokyo and the price is great for them too - definitely useful to get a Ramen fix.
Aki is a great eatery, the food shines and having a convenient location in Midland makes it a good choice for...
