A Soiree of Flavours and Connections at Sonny's Bar

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A mesmerizing odyssey awaited me at Sonny's Bar—an experience that defies the constraints of language, spanning from the vibrant strains of funky jazz to the intimate connections forged among patrons. This establishment, where the echoes of laughter and the resonance of shared stories create a symphony of senses, left an indelible mark upon my soul.

Upon entering, a symphony of sensory delights enveloped me—a dance of music and warmth that whispered promises of a captivating evening. The décor, a harmonious blend of vintage charm and contemporary allure, painted a canvas for connections to flourish. Soft chandeliers cast a gentle glow, illuminating not just the space, but the moments and memories that were yet to unfold.

The staff were true orchestrators of hospitality, each a unique narrator in the tale that was about to unravel. The bartender, an enchanting paradox of strength and tenderness, conjured libations that were a mosaic of flavours. The host, exuding charisma and warmth, extended a smile that was a key to the world of shared experiences. The server, captivating as a muse, embodied the meticulous care that makes Sonny's Bar a sanctuary of hospitality.

The culinary journey, a symphony of tastes and textures, unveiled dishes that transcended mere sustenance. The cheese, candied macadamia, and rye lavosh were an ode to culinary ingenuity—an exploration of simplicity elevated to extraordinary heights. With each bite, flavors danced upon my palate, creating an unforgettable sonnet of taste. The memory of that cheddar cheese lingers, a cherished refrain that beckons for encores.

The ambiance evolved like a sonnet unfolding through the evening. The music, akin to fluid drum and bass, complemented conversations and evoked a desire to sway and infuse the air with positivity. Amid this melodic backdrop, connections flourished—patrons transforming from strangers to companions, sharing stories and laughter as the night progressed.

Sonny's Bar is a haven where genuine connections take centre stage—a space where walls resonate with the echoes of laughter and dreams. It's a testament to the fusion of urban sophistication and heartfelt camaraderie, where the art of conversation is treasured, and bonds form effortlessly. Amid the welcoming enclave of MT HAWTHORN, Sonny's Bar stands as a beacon of urban escapism—a space where life slows down to embrace shared moments and where the essence of the city's soul finds its most captivating expression.

As I left, I couldn't shake off the feeling of the night—the mix of tastes, the good company, and the vibes. Sonny's Bar isn't just a spot you visit; it's one of those stories you'll keep telling. The memory lingers, even after you've set down the...

When you first step into Sonny's Bar in Mt Hawthorn, you're struck by the warmth of the place. It's not just the solid fuel burning hearth crackling away in the corner, but the close-knit team that greets you with a smile. You can tell that this isn't just any restaurant – it's a community.

And the food! Oh, the food. Head Chef Aaron Reid, a nomadic forager from the countryside of Victoria, has created a menu that is a feast for the senses. The ingredients are fresh, locally sourced, and expertly prepared. But it's not just the quality of the ingredients that sets Sonny's apart – it's the way they're cooked.

The wood burning stove is at the heart of the kitchen, infusing every dish with a smoky, rustic flavor that will transport you to a cabin in the woods. The smoked meats are a true standout, with tender duck and juicy chicken that fall off the bone. And let's not forget about the sides – the homemade focaccia is a revelation, with just the right amount of saltiness and crunch.

But it's not all meat and potatoes at Sonny's. Chef Aaron also works his magic with vegetables, creating innovative dishes like charred leeks with hazelnut romesco and pickled raisins. And the interesting native inspired granita's are a refreshing and unique take on dessert.

But the food is only part of the story. The team at Sonny's is truly something special. Chef Aaron is a force to be reckoned with, with a towering Afro and a passion for sustainability that shines through in every dish. He's surrounded by a crew of talented and friendly folks who treat you like family from the moment you walk in the door.

And speaking of family, Sonny's is even dog-friendly, so you can bring your furry friends along for the ride. It all adds up to a dining experience that is both delicious and memorable.

But behind every great restaurant is a great owner, and Sonny's is no exception. So let's raise a glass to Jessica Blyth and her team for creating such an awesome venue. With its focus on sustainability and inclusiveness, Sonny's is a shining example of what a restaurant can and should be. So if you're looking for a taste of the countryside in the heart of Mt Hawthorn, look no further than Sonny's Bar. Chef Aaron and the team will make you feel right at home, and the wood burning stove will warm your heart and your belly. Just be sure to come hungry – you won't want to miss a...

We are North Perth locals and have been searching for some time for a very nice Wine Bar and Restaurant near to our home. Some months ago we visited Sonny's for the first time and have returned almost weekly since . We cannot provide any feedback on the food as we have concentrated on having drinks at this very nicely appointed bar/restaurant. However other patrons have been very complementary about the food options. The wine and cocktail lists provide sufficient variety for people with eclectic tastes . The staff have been very helpful in mixing cocktails for me ( Kir Royales) which did not appear on their menu but which they went out of their way to make. This example of outstanding customer service permeates through the restaurant and is one of the prime reasons for our return visits. Staff are incredible friendly, professional and engaging. They allowed us to offer music and song recommendations for their inhouse entertainment system without any pushback. In fact they welcomed suggestions from other patrons who joined us in some friendly singalongs. This does not mean that the interactions were raucous or overly noisy. More that the participants thoroughly enjoyed their times at Sonny's whilst being respectful of other patrons. This is a really enjoyable and classy bar and one we feel sure that you will enjoy. Very well done to Jess (the wonderful Bar owner) and Joe ( the outstanding...

You’re in the hands of a creative and passionate team here. I briefly visit Perth twice a year, and being a greedy bastard, choose my restaurants with great care. This was my first time at Sonny’s. We were greeted and looked after by Eleanor, who could not have been more friendly, helpful and enthusiastic about the sheer joy being generated by Chef Soufika Boulton and her team. Started with oysters topped with finger lime, an inspired pairing. Small plump and sweet. Next came the finest crudo - loin of Tasmanian bluefin tuna with wafer thin shavings of daikon radish and a mandarin vinegar. Possibly one of the greatest dishes I’ve had. The vinegar subtle enough to let the tuna shine and the daikon giving the bonus crunch. Bliss. We finished with the pork collar and a fennel and sugar snap salad. Fennel is not my go to, but it was sweet and not at all overpowering. The added sliver of pickled anchovy brought the umami. It was the perfect pairing to a beautifully flame grilled pork chop. The caramelised bark around the bone, full of flavour and the koji butter sauce a revelation. Eleanor kindly allowed us the chance to sample a few carefully selected wines by the glass, before we chose the Picpoul and then a robust Spanish red, graciano I think. Perth has a standard bearer, and Sonny’s is its name. Thank you for the finest dining experience I’ve had here yet.

For a wine bar restaurant, the food here is creative and excellent.  We were told that the head chef did a stint at Wildflower, and the presentation and flavours of some dishes really show it, and there are some stand-out dishes in the ever changing menu.  Ingredients were fresh, sauces and ingredients include local and native elements, and most dishes cooked perfectly. Of particular note were delicate yet complex crudos, melt in your mouth moreish pork dishes, and even quality bread with infused butter. However, we did have a slight issue with overcooked fish and a somewhat more pear flavour than prawn raw dish. In the end though, each meal has been overall very good. Even though it could be hard to get their attention at times, we had some pretty good service, and we had some friendly waiters who provided great recommendations for both food and alcohol. Bring cash to avoid the card fee.

A little plate of 'house pickles', bread finished over an open fire and a twist on the classic espresso martini to start Sunday. Sonny's holds a well deserved spot in WA's Top 100, with an ever changing food, wine and cocktail menu, clearly run by a team that thinks about what they serve, then executes with precision. Every plate, every sip felt harmonious and in the knowledge of its evolution, it's the sort of restaurant that you'd happily return to. The ambiance is cozy yet refined, making it the perfect spot for a relaxed but elevated dining experience. Whether you’re a regular or a first-time visitor, Sonny’s has a way of making you feel like you’re part of something special.
