The Star Hotel in Albury shines brightly, not just for its unwavering commitment to hospitality but also for its unique fusion of fine dining and geopolitical solidarity. Open on a quiet Sunday evening—when many others have turned off their lights—the Star Hotel exemplifies resilience and community spirit, offering weary travelers and locals a warm welcome.
The chef, whose heritage remains a mystery, deserves high praise for crafting a specials menu that goes beyond mere culinary artistry. It stands as a bold tribute to the ongoing struggle on the Eastern Front in Ukraine, supporting NATO and the Ukrainian people in their fight against Russian aggression. This remarkable solidarity is expressed through dishes that resonate with symbolism and purpose.
The star of the show, quite literally, is the Chicken Kyiv (or Chicken Cordon Bleu as known in some jurisdictions) —a dish as valiant as its namesake city. While perhaps light on cheese, it overflows with heart and courage, a flavorful metaphor for the indomitable spirit of Ukraine. The accompanying steamed vegetables provide a wholesome balance, though it must be said that the asparagus steals the spotlight with its crisp and vibrant character. For the less adventurous, the salad and chips provide a safe and satisfying option.
Beyond the menu, the Star Hotel boldly champions Western values, broadcasting American wrestling and even featuring the UFC. The recent spectacle of Donald Trump and Elon Musk ringside added a surreal layer to an already metaphoric battle, echoing the determination of liberal democracies to triumph over adversity.
While some may lament the absence of cabbage, the Star Hotel compensates with an experience that is as inspiring as it is delicious. From the kitchen to the screen, every aspect of this establishment serves as a reminder that even in a small corner of the earth, the fight for freedom and solidarity continues.
Highly recommended for both the palate...
Read moreI only wish I had read the reviews before deciding to go to this pub. I ordered the chicken snitty salad and chips. Well what I got was not a fresh chicken snitty. I received a heart shaped piece of meat that they sell in Cole’s and woollies for $1.50each. It was so rubbery it would have bounced off the floor if I had dropped it. They must of taken it straight out of the freezer and deep fried it. The centre of the so called snitty was not even warm. The salad had not been rinsed and looked liked a handful of lettuce leaves have just been smacked on the plate. If I could say it had three drops of salad dressing to give the leaves some flavour that would be great. It is not as if they were busy it was a Monday night at 6.45pm no more than 10 people in the bistro. I travel extensively for work throughout Australia and I can honestly say this was the worst chicken snitty salad and chips i have ever tasted. I didn’t take it back to the cook because i was so annoyed with what he served up he would have had an excuse anyway. I am now on my second day of 4 in Albury and will not be eating at this venue again. Once bitten twice shy. Please don’t pass off a $1.50 piece of something as a...
Read moreMy adult daughter and i needed to go somewhere while my car needed servicing close by, so we chose the Star Hotel to wait it out and we are so glad we did. The owner and staff there were so accommodating, the bistro wasn't quite open at that time however they organized for me to get a cappuccino and toasty as I skipped brekky. later on, in the morning the chef asked us if we wanted to order our lunch earlier after we told him we will need to pick the car up and may miss out on lunch. I thought how special are we that he suggested that to us. The owner was very friendly checking in on us at times and also offered some car battery advise which I welcomed very much. When our meals arrived, they covered the whole plate they were very generous helpings we were very impressed, we had to take leftovers home. I ordered garlic prawns, salad and chips, and my daughter got the squid, salad and chips plus we got bruschetta and garlic/cheese bread which was absolutely delicious all of it. The meal was worth every cent and reflecting on the menu we thought the meal prices were very reasonable. Thank you again Star staff you made us feel so welcome and at home we will be back...
