Quite a middle of the road and rundown venue. This place needs a bit of love. The staff are friendly enough. The food was not very good. We paid about $22 for a dry pizza, I ordered a $15 halloumi which was the smallest serving imaginable and multiple cocktails - one of which (banana flavoured cocktail) was totally undrinkable due to the amount of sugar added. All the food came out SLOWLY and separately. The worst part for us was the seating. On booking there was no seat selection, nor any mention of “seating requests” so naturally we got there an hour early and lined up to secure a comfortable seat with a good view. Upon entry we were taken to our “designated” table which was shoved into the corner of the room on a high table and chair. I asked the staff why we’d been designated a seat and they said everyone gets assigned a seat and you have to make a special request in the booking notes if you have a preference which is not advertised anywhere. We were extremely disappointed with our seats which faced the back of the musician we came to see and were very uncomfortable (at least put a proper table and chair out!). Because I asked we were offered a similar seat on the opposite side of the room (with just as bad a view) and it was seated with another couple so we declined so as not to bother them for little benefit. I would suggest making your booking system better or not allocating seating at all! EDIT RESPONSE TO THE REPLY: It’s impossible to let you know that there are issues with the food and drink on the night when you literally stealth it in DURING a live show one item at a time. I’m not exactly going to speak out loud to the waiter and ruin the show for everyone, and telling you at the end of the show yields no result. Regarding seating - it’s a poor booking experience and you should make your seating process known clearly not “read through all the T’s&C’s to find it in the fine print”. This speaks volumes about how much you care.

I am here at the jazz club Sat 22 April for the Brazilian samba night. Got here 12.40am and there was a person leaving. I offered to pay the full ticket price of $20 but the Asian lady at the door refused and said no. I was happy to support the musicians even though less than 30 mins left. The doorman was lovely - he went to ask the Asian lady manager who told him no. Even while I was waiting for 15 mins another 10 people left. Doesn’t make sense at all. Anyway from the outside the musicians looked great Edit: owner replied saying that it was due to people upstairs leaving vs downstairs and this was explained First - not true on her talking to me. The doorman said the already talked to the Asian lady manager, and I cannot talk to her to understand why. He also told me he doesn’t know why she is not letting people in Secondly - I can see from outside into inside, and there are people leaving. There were two guys who came out from the samba dance floor! Anyway - this is more to let the owner know that the Asian lady manager seems terrible and obnoxious, not experienced. Refused to talk to the customers The doorman seemed helpless but at least he tried

The Ellington is Perth’s pre-eminent Jazz Club, founded by Graham Wood and Bernard Kong. Graham (deceased) was the Professor of Jazz at the famous Western Australian Academy of Performing arts (WAAPA). The club is modelled on the Jazz Standard, in the basement of the Blue Smoke Bar and Barbeque restaurant in Gramercy, Manhattan. However, The Ellington doesn’t have the layout and space to offer the comfortable cabaret seating or the ability to offer clients a full gourmet meal like the Jazz Standard does. However, for live music performances in an setting, the Ellington has no peer in Perth, and is amongst the best few Jazz venues in Australia.

The main attraction of the function room at The Ellington is to enjoy the show, so it was really disappointing that the staff couldn't get the AV system working. We didn't get to see or hear the band that was playing apart from some muffled bass coming from downstairs. We kept asking when they'll have it working, they would answer "soon" but then just ignored us when we asked for updates. During the intermission I went downstairs to find the manager who admitted it hadn't been working for a few months. Basically I was mislead in order to secure a booking so they wouldn't lose a sale. We had pre-ordered food which came out late. Extra food that we ordered was arriving sooner so I think they had actually forgotten about it. The serving sizes were pitiful for the amount paid. There's a good range of cocktails on the menu but many were not available as they didn't have the ingredients to make them. The soft drinks were flat and warm. I asked the manager if they could compensate us by discounting the bill but she was dismissive of my complaint and wouldn't even give this small gesture of good-will. I'm astounded that a music venue can't get an AV system working or even restock the bar. It's so disappointing to see this once wonderful club ruined by such poor management. I've been a regular patron of The Ellington for many years but after this experience I won't...
