Good food, good prices; atmosphere, surroundings not so good and only so-so service. The restaurant has a small number of tables inside. There's a clear warning on the door to not enter without a reservation (see photo). While that may be true it isn't the best introduction to a new place to eat. There is ANOTHER warning about the same on one part of their menu -- again, it isn't welcoming and it made me feel uncomfortable. (Summary: please call us several days before to ask for a reservation; if you call us during service hours we may not answer the phone.) Unfortunately we didn't know about this so had not made reservations which forced us onto one of the outside tables (there were 4 or 5). They face a car park which is maybe 20 metres from the road. Personally I don't enjoy exhaust fumes when I eat but maybe I'm in the minority. The lunch menu is simple with four choices, each one attractive and well-priced. The photos of the sushi & sashimi on the menu showed salmon which I don't like and I asked if they could substitute anything else. They could and did with no fuss which I appreciated a lot. The food didn't take long to arrive and was fresh & tasty. Their wasabe has a kick to it -- stronger than normal. My lunch set included some tempura but they don't provide daikon oroshi (grated daikon radish) that normally goes into the sauce. I asked for it but they said they don't have it, a strange omission from an otherwise good Japanese restaurant. We were a party of 3 and everyone enjoyed their meals. My friends like sake and they rated Hakura's as one of the best they've had in Cairns. The miso soup was also among the best we've had in Cairns.

THE BEST JAPANESE RESTAURANT I EVER HAD IN AUSTRALIA ❤️❤️❤️ i got a Huraka Gozen Special and Yuzu Beer for lunch. - Tempura batter is not too thick, just perfect to make it crispy - Sashimi fresh and nice - Miso soup got salmon and egg (if i’m not wrong) in it, taste good, not like those miso soup in other restaurants that are just salty. - Sushi got wasabi in between the fish and rice, a perfect ratio. It’s my first time having Yuzu beer, it actually tastes pretty similar to yuzu chuhai to me, girls who love sweet alcohol would love it! staffs are nice and friendly, i’m sorry that i have to cancel the dessert, the lunch set had fill me up already.. Definitely will be back when i come Cairns again!!!!

I ordered the large sashimi platter and was quite disappointed. The salmon pieces were from parts that are typically not used for sashimi, and both the kingfish and tuna were cut into small, unimpressive pieces. It felt like I was served leftover sashimi, which was a letdown. We also tried the tonkatsu, but unfortunately, the pork was dry and tough—definitely not what I expected from a tonkatsu. It wasn’t tender or flavorful enough to do justice to the dish. I might have had higher expectations after receiving a recommendation from a Japanese local in Cairns, but unfortunately, this meal didn’t meet them.
