Lucky Fish will fast become the go-to cafe for fish and chips in Palm Cove.
The Food: I ate perfectly cooked, lightly battered coral trout with beer battered chips. It was served with a generous portion of tartare, and there were other typical condiments already supplied on the table. I also had a serving of lime and pepper calamari, which was fresh, cooked to perfection, and well seasoned. The cafe was licensed and had a small but well considered selection.
The Service: The young lady working the floor/front counter was absolutely outstanding! It’s so hard to perfect the balance between being funny, engaging and efficient and being overbearing, but she nailed it, all the while maintaining a great level of professionalism.
The Setting: The cafe is light, spacious and airy, with indoor, covered outdoor, and completely outdoor options available. It is well sheltered on the first floor of a gorgeous group of brightly painted shops, right on the esplanade in Palm Cove central. The decor was tasteful and simple.
A delicious, friendly and reasonably priced option amongst a slew of overpriced...

Firstly coral trout was one of the three fish available. One of the best eating reef fish there is. I ordered mine grilled and I could still taste the sea, in a good way. Perfectly grilled. The chips were crispy to the end. The homemade tartare and slice of fresh lemon was a delicious flavour bomb. This little gem is on the esplanade, but a step away from the hustle as it is behind the nothing over $22 shop. A towering gum tree keeps you company if you can jag a table, but if not grab to go and sit on the beach. Cost was $17 for a piece of fish (did I mention coral trout one the best there is) and chips and the portion was generous. My companion had the barramundi, slightly cheaper at $15 with chips and was equally pleased. Barra, coral trout, barra, coral trout, take your pick you cannot go wrong here. Environmentally friendly cutlery, napkins...
Read moreI recently spent a few days in Cairns and made sure to visit Lucky Fish in Palm Cove twice!
The food was absolutely incredible The coral trout fish and chips and prawn tacos were fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked Even though I'm sensitive to fried food, I had no issues at all 😁 The generous portions were a delightful surprise
On our second visit, we intended to have a light lunch and share a prawn taco However, the first taco was so irresistible that we ended up ordering another one along with a portion of lime and pepper squid 😄
The service was top-notch, with friendly and welcoming staff 🙂 The relaxed atmosphere and beautiful beachside location made for a perfect experience
I was so impressed that I even forgot my water bottle! The staff was kind enough to send it back to me the next day ❤️
The only thing that could have made it better was the amazing music playlist! 🎶
Thank you for such a wonderful experience I can't wait to return! Cheers from an Italian boy 🇮🇹...
