The Pastry Place – Robe Still on the quest for Australia’s best pie, we found ourselves in the charming seaside town of Robe, and made a beeline for the highly-rated Pastry Place on 6 Union Street. It was breakfast time, the menu was small but packed with promise — and it delivered. I went for the beef, bacon, and onion pie and a traditional sausage roll. The pie was a hearty, meaty number, filled to the brim with slow-cooked beef, smoky bacon, and sweet onion. This is exactly what you want when you ask for a proper, homemade pie — packed with flavour, no shortcuts, 5/5. But the real standout? The traditional sausage roll. And I don’t say this lightly — possibly the best I’ve had, and I’ve tried more than a few in my time. The pastry was rich and buttery, the filling perfectly balanced — firm yet moist, with a savoury depth of flavour that hits all the right notes. If you find yourself in Robe, beat a path straight to The Pastry Place. Grab a pie, grab a sausage roll — disappointment is...
Read moreJust goes to show that not everyone has the same taste. I appreciate a good pastry so made the effort to check these guys out before leaving town. The store had just opened when I arrived and I can appreciate the man serving was busy but surely a smile and friendly greeting could be offered 🤔. Obviously, this wasn't the case. It was clear there were a couple of local guys waiting for coffee and they had a bit more of his attention. Prices are on the high side but the sizes are generous. There weren't any choc Croissants yet so I had the sausage roll. Though clearly fresh it was way to greasy for my liking. I had to rub it down with three serviettes (the photo clearly shows the greasy paper bag). I'm sorry to say I did not e joy it at all. The taste was OK and the meat was moist.
The coffee was good, but not exceptional and the takeaway cup wasn't filled to the top. It was also lukewarm.
The interior of the cafe looks lovely and bright and you can sit...
Read moreA tiny little shop off the main shopping strip in Robe well worth a visit. We had the Lamb, Rosemary and Vegetable Pies for lunch and they were a generous size, hot and delicious. The pastry perfection and the filling rich and full of flavour. The pies were served (takeaway) in foil pans which made them easier to eat. We sat outside on one of the four tables provided for patrons and ate our lunch with our pups, enjoying the fresh air and a good cappuccino. The pies were very filling, so the piece of Hummingbird Cake I fancied came home with us for afternoon tea. This was moist and lightly spiced, delicious. Highly recommend and did not find what was offered too expensive (as some reviews have mentioned). The pastries are high quality, generous and beautifully presented. We will return for lunch again before the end of our...
