I tried this cafe once and wasn't really impressed with the food. So I let it go in case it was just a bad day. I gave them another go today and ordered something different but the kitchen is still turning out pretty ordinary food.
Today, one of the items we ordered was simply a bucket of chips. The chips were hand cut with skins on which I really like but the cooking of the chips was really bad. It's like they were boiled in tepid oil. Soggy, oily, floppy. No hint of crispy. Hand cut chips need to be double or triple fried and these were barely fried once. The chips were also underseasoned. If a short order cook can't cook chips properly then I think there is a problem.
For myself, I ordered a scrambled eggs on toast. The eggs look like they cooked on a flat plate rather than a non stick because they were a discoloured brown by residue from other food. They were also overcooked, underseasoned and watery. The parsley on top was a nice touch but couldn't mask the issues. The toast was ok but cut a bit thinly and the "butter" that came with it was gross, it had the texture of margarine and didn't seem like it was salted. Plain salted butter is all that's required.
The previous time I went to this cafe I had a chicken pita and I remember it was badly underseasoned, so the underseasoning theme continues across all of the food we've ordered. IMO food needs to be seasoned as it is cooked because a customer using table salt does not achieve the correct result.
Given the atmosphere was nice, the service was good and the drinks were good, I've given an "It's OK" rating but if I was only rating the kitchen it would not be...
Read moreSo Millpoint caffe bookshop has been sold, new owners are in and it has been restored to its former glory ........so they say......
Ummm I am confused former glory??I feel like it has gone downhill in the past few weeks, nothing like it was even as soon as 6 months ago; To my shock it was all new (very arrogant I might add) staff, what happened to all my favourite guys and gals?? An Italian family who constantly talked Italian around us has taken over and to be honest it made me feel a bit uncomfortable the aggression in their voice not knowing what they were saying!!!
They have for some reason changed coffee supplier ( why they would get rid of Fiori is beyond me!! ) the coffee was very average kinda tasted a bit weak and very bland. And the food was nothing like it was either, I used to love grabbing a wrap or roll from the cabinet when I was in a hurry but it was practically empty, lucky I was dining in so ordered of the menu but unfortunately what I received was extremely sloppy looking and stone cold!
And the real shocker was the lack of books. I remember coming here in the good old days the bookshelf’s full of the most interesting books and the knowledge of the staff behind the counter was next to amazing, kinda restored my faith in the world of books. Well I guess that’s over.
I will not waste my time or money coming here anymore they are along way away from its former glory, plenty of other great coffee places in...
Read moreWell!! Did Anyone say Fresh? I’ll Tell you like it is all the same. We took a chance to stop in at this lovely, quaint if not eclectic caffe today and we were not disappointed either. It only went in search for coffee and a gluten free cake or something to go with out. A quick dash in saw me served with such surprising hospitality as if I was someplace in Italy and an expected guest. Note, that Is surprising given the excuses many cafes give when their staff are rude , glib or just plain run off their feet when bad service occurs. Oh yes the cake.. It was fresh Fresh as if it just left the oven. It was their gluten free/dairy free orange sponge cake that was as tall as you could or should have a single layer and just enough orange drizzled to soak in and not spoil the sponge. Anyway it is served with cream on the side (I had mine without, but it was the most sumptuous slice I’ve had in a v v v long time. Oh!, other local cafes! Take note at the serving sizes and stop telling me that you have had to decrease your cake slices to two finger widths with inflation, because this cafe gives you more slice(4 finger widths) for your $$ than you’re expecting to have. What a wonderful experience and the coffee was an excellent match! Thanks for really serving us, like we were actually...
