"Kae-dama please!! This place shows Sunshine Coast how ramen should be done."

For the past few years since I've moved here the Sunshine Coast has been a let-down to ramen enthusiasts with scarce and average offerings, requiring trips at least to Brisbane to truly satisfy cravings.

But finally no longer, for Umami has entered the scene! Although they've already been open for almost a year, I only just stumbled across them from an online search as I needed an outlet for my cravings after returning from a recent Tokyo trip.

The reviews did not let me down, in fact I'm impressed that this is the real deal! So far I have tried their tonkotsu ramen and their smoky black ramen (a smoked garlic oil twist on their tonkotsu) and both have hit the mark with their rich, creamy pork bone broth and thin, firm springy noodles (no overcooked, soggy business here, thankfully).

The chicken karaage is also excellent, served in large pieces keeping the meat moist and succulent without overdoing the batter like some other places here (if you know, you know). I look forward to trying the rest of their menu in due time, which I appreciate they've kept small as that is a hallmark of a restaurant that serves only a few dishes, but does them really well.

Overall, a very welcomed entrance and I sincerely hope they continue to keep up the standards they've now raised, as ramen just got serious on the Sunny Coast. Other folks on the coast need to step...

The ramen is awesome. The service is hit and miss. Went today with my wife and ordered 2x ramens. Hers with extra veggies, mine with extra noddle. They both came out & noddle amounts looked the same. No big deal, just would not bother next time on the extra noddles. After we both finished our meals, they came out with my extra noodles. So I had an empty finished bowl and an extra side of plain noodles. No big deal on the extra noddles coming out late, but the customer service in handling it was baaaaad. It was their mistake, but they made me feel like it was my issue. Mistakes happen. No worries! Just don't blame the customer for your error. A little customer service goes a long way... You want to feel good in who gets your patronage. The way it was handled came across arrogant and could be interpreted that you don't need any extra customers. Happy to talk to the manager via email or call if helpful. If the service matched the food it would be...

Having lived in Japan for over 6 years and being well travelled I thought from reviews that this might be a good spot to try. Atmosphere is kind of grunge vibes….mismatched old chairs and very old and extremely dirty tables….Even in the oldest ramen shops in Japan they keep things clean for customers. Anyway, I ordered the pork gyoza and Tonkotsu ramen to keep it simple…. The wait was too long….ramen doesn’t take that much time nor do gyoza. So anyway my gyoza arrived….they looked good but lacked flavour and cabbage…….the tonkotsu came out in a small bowl and again it looked ok but the ramen noodles were terrible and the broth tasted like it had corn starch in it….. I finished the gyoza and left a nearly full bowl of tonkotsu and left. I won’t be returning… The cost was outrageous and food was most certainly substandard in my opinion. I think Nobuzo and Ikko are far more authentic and I shall stick with...

I’ve just ordered the spicy red ramen take away. When I got home and opened it I was surprised to see a tiny portion of pork, 1 thin tiny slice. I thought surely there must of been a mistake and contacted the restaurant. I asked the young lady on the phone about the pork and she said no, that’s normal, we only give one slice of pork. I asked if she thought 1 piece of pork was reasonable considering I’ve just paid $20 for noodles and she said shes not the one I should be talking to. I asked if she wanted to give the owner some feedback and she said she’s not interested. If you think about what the ramen consists of, it’s mostly noodles which cost next to nothing. So you’re paying mostly for the roast pork. It’s literally not even one mouth full of pork, I could easily fit the whole slice in one mouthful with plenty of room for more slices.

VERY overrated on google maps, taste bland, over priced for small portions. Added extra topping of pork and at the end it was only one piece…they should specify that on the menu price is for one piece of meat. The ramen soup is tasteless like sticky warm water. Chilli oil cost extra and has no chilli taste. In conclusion this soup has no flavour at all and is DISGUSTINGLY sticky, being Asian myself and regular ramen eater this soup is non authentic and unacceptable. My $2 instant noodle taste way better. Karaage chicken portion as displayed… Got tricked by the google review rating of 4.6. More like a 2.6. All doors were wide open in the middle of winter and fans spinning above the heads, freezing cold.
