The Cannery in Rosebery is a destination you need to visit if you are looking for food and beverages around the Rosebery area. The Cannery has it all; quality Cafes, a brewery, a distillery and a number of quality dining establishments. Hidden inside the Cannery is a relatively new Modern Vietnamese Restaurant called Banh Xeo Bar. It is run by a husband and wife team who started the business as a market stall specialising in Banh Xeo (a savoury Vietnamese pancake/crepe). They are integrating traditional Vietnamese cusine with nose to tail British cooking techniques and boy the food is good.
There are a number of tasty starters which include the ever popular fresh rice paper rolls or tasty little morsels - the pigs head nuggets. Something that cannot be passed on, is the bone marrow with fermented chilli. Spread a combination of the bone marrow and fermented chilli on toasted bread, there is a richness in flavour, you are truly in for a treat.
Of course there is the Banh Xeo in many varieties. A huge serving that overlaps the plate, this crisp folded pancake/crepe is filled with fresh mint, bean sprouts, we had pigs head nuggets as our protein of choice. This is also served with lettuce cups, fill them with a portion of banh xeo, fresh mint and a generous pour of the sweet vietnamese dipping sauce.
The soup dishes have us returning for more. The banh bo hue a slightly spicy soup made from bone broth which has done plenty of time to give this soup a ridiculous amount of flavour. They also do a very good banh rieu. This is a Vietnamese crab cake soup, this soup is a little less common and also very impressive.
Banh Xeo Bar serves a quality Vietnamese cuisine infused with British cooking techniques. It is a little pricey for Vietnamese food, however the food is top notch and it is a local for us. Well worth travelling for, the soup dishes are amongst the best we have...
Read moreSadly my experience was not great. Ordered the combination bun bo hue, the beef tongue banh mi, and an iced coffee. The service was ok, not great, they seemed a bit flustered. I had wanted to try the Banh Xeo as that’s their specialty but it said allow 15-20 minutes and my toddler was already a bit restless so i ordered what i thought would be a little quicker.
Waited 30 minutes for the food..
The banh mi was okay, but not worth the $16 compared to tastier and fresher ones I’ve had before.
The soup and noodles were lukewarm and we were given the plain beef noodles instead as there were no nuggets or beef tongue in the noodles. Realised halfway as I was sharing with mum and she had already eaten half while I had been feeding my daughter.
Went to ask about it at the counter and they said they would sort it out. I sat back down thinking they would just bring the missing nuggets. Five to ten minutes passed and we had finished eating and one of the waiters came to look at our bowl to verify we were telling the truth I’m guessing? No update. Another 5 minutes and nothing happened so we just left as my little one was getting pretty cranky.
My iced coffee was nice but quite small.
Overall tasty but lacked attention to detail, not great value for $45! Might have to try the banh xeo to justify the fuss. Will not be getting any of today’s...
Read moreWe came here for a late lunch on a Saturday. We ordered the chicken liver pate on toast and the pork & prawn bahn xeo to share.
The food took a while to come even though we were the only customers at the restaurant. The chicken liver pate on toast was delicious. It tasted great when you ate it together with the 2 condiments which they served on the side.
The banh xeo was also a very generous serving. It was filled with lots of shredded pork and a decent amount of prawns. Unfortunately, the prawns didn't taste fresh. It also had a mushy texture. The bahn xeo was also a bit oily, but that is to be expected.
Overall, the food was decent. Price was a bit on the higher side. We might come back one day to try other dishes...
